Race#5-#3 ORDER ONE TO GO 6-1 ML Has been a fringe player since the claim, love him in here tonight, great post for a non leaver, he gets in the flow with any type of fractions, see him flying late.
Race#8-#8 HUNTINTHELASTDOLL AR 6-1 ML One of the most wide open Pacing Derby events in years. Will go off at a price, if YG can work out a trip near the front, can get up at a price. #6 will be the favorite don’t like him in here.
Rsce#12-#1 GLENBORO 6-1 ML I’ve had good luck betting this mare this year, overdue for a better performance, weak last quarters lately. She can leave, hate the post but Cullen stable was white hot last night…
Best of luck!!!

race 7--#9 Boxer Seelster--not much of a price but should be very strong late in the mile

Race 6- Highland Kismet trotting hobbles off. Curious to see if he goes faster or makes a break

Kismet looked very powerful in the stretch
i am not overly enamored with final quarters and/or final times --this one looked improved--not sure if the no hopples were the reason-i just watch races

Very impressive. Could have gone much faster

it will be interesting to see if Kismet, Sig Sauer and Secret Agent Man are gaining on Karl--or is Karl also progressing as much
hopefully we find out

I'm sure they have been experimenting going without the hopples for quite sometime because that looked effortless especially down the stretch like you mentioned. Any thoughts when they might hook up against one another besides the breeders crown?

Usually they all go to Lexington for a speed badge
Kentucky Futurity in October if it is still called that

I think it's still called that.. it would be on Karl's "home track" so to speak . I think Sig Sauer would be tough to beat right now.. but the big races are in a month or two.. alot can change between now and then
-
Like the rabbit said this race is wide open meaning the Canadian Pacing Derby. I hope Bythemissal comes back into form.. his qualifier was impressive. I'd stab at it with Best in Show with Scotty Z.

Yeah we all have nights like that.. like Pap said the 1 Oakwood Ardan had a golden trip. He's a good horse but not quite on the level of a few of those others. I wish Drury could had gotten the 7 up over pl ozzy in the ninth race it would have made the pick 5 pay more.. I'm live to the 2-5-7-9. All decent payouts but come on Dexter.

Good call I liked him the best as well but had to try and beat him. Dexter was just to far back.. Another Scotty Z masterclass Not a bad way to make a living.. banking 2 half million dollar races in a half hour. ;D

Is there any major race Zeron hasn't won?

You know what's funny.. I watched it live and then just watched the replay.. He was hung the whole mile.. not a great drive just had the best horse. I thought he had sometime on the rail but he didnt.. so not a masterclass...LOL . but he is a great driver

Highland Kismet , what an easy looking mile that was!
Saturday night observations and thoughts:
1.) Chantilly was the most electrifying performance of the night. She probably is the best 2yo filly in North American right now, and may be the best 2yo. Very well built for a 2yo filly.
2.) American History started the program with a jolt. The horse gets no respect for his career and ability to be brought back into shape at a very high level year after year. Aside from the $1.7mm on his card with 46 wins he has raced EVERY year from his two year old till now, his 9 year old year with the following times:
2017-Only 5 races as a 2 year old, but was best timed in 150.3
2018-1:47
2019-1:49.3(YR..1/2), 1:48.3WB
2020-1:47.1 with a 1:48.4WB
2021-1:47.2
2022-1:48.3WB
2023-1:48.2WB
2024-1:48.4WB (last night!)
3.) Why didn't Ake set up Jiggy Jog for $450 U.S. in the big trot??
4.) Kismet looked solid without his pants on.
5.) Linda Toscano looked great; she must have lost 150 pounts (Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro??)
6.) I agree that a Breeders' Crown showdown (especially if there are eliminations, which will make the win more emphatic) amongst Karl, TCI, Kismet, Sig Sauer etc. will be exciting. Hope they are all there and in good form.
-
Linda Toscano lost a few pounds but needs to lose at least 100 more!

All good observations
American History cost me the early pick5.. what's most impressive about him to me isn't the speed it's the consistency for that many years. I read an article that Ake is really spreading out Jiggy Jog's starts (think only 4 this year) because she had a few and will have some in the future against the boys. Her last start was on August 17th. Remember she was primarily bought for breeding so every start is a bonus for them
-
Ake is unreal with getting so much from every class horse he has with so little starts for each one. I'm expecting Tony Adams to be as good as the top ones in the late season. If he didn't get stuck behind a breaker in last he would have won for fun. Now Ake is getting Hail Mary a 8 year old millionaire Googoo Gaga gelding for the international and beyond. Wonder how many starts he will end up getting in the states. I wouldn't expect too many. He can barely get any starts for Asteroid and he has so many Open horses as it is.

I believe they just sold Asteroid on ongait. Unless it was a buyback; I don't know who who owned him. Around $150k i think.

Yes, I just looked it up. $150,000 to Cullipher's Pollack on Friday.

All true words about American History but.....
he was the beneficiary of a rare hardball play by Sylvain by parking out Roy
doesnt hit the board if Write Me a Rose is allowed to clear
we just mentioned how the Mohawk drivers are all friendly and hardball is a rarity
this was one of those rare moments
take nothing from American History--he did what he was supposed to do--capitalized on a speed duel, but no way he wins without one--and it was a vicious one indeed

Yeah it was nice watching the racing there last night. Mcnair hung Miller out to dry in the maple leaft trot. Never will know what would have happened had be been let go

it really was a great night to watch
race 1--we had some real hardball
race 2 Chantilly was monstrous
race 3--Drawn Impression was huge again
race 6 Kismet no hobbles looked powerful and improved
race 7--Jody and Trevor had a real chess game driving with Jody winning
Zeron had two perfect drives in CPD and MLT
fantastic to watch tmbz1

Chantilly beat a weak Ontario sire stakes group last night with literally not one in that race who looks like they would be competitive outside of the sire stakes program. A nice filly to be sure, but until she faces real competition like Papi Grad, Westwinds, Ascendance, Cowgirl Hanover, and some of the Burke monsters suggest that you cool it with the superlatives.
-
I think the 2yo Crown paces will both be competitive. Very fast crop this year!

My favorite team in sports to watch is the GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS AND STEPH CURRY and the reason is simple as i know i will see a great and classy show,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Now yesterdays show was awesome as it started from race one and they raced and it was fun to watch and the heavy rains the night prior i am sure helped,,,,,,,,,,,,Ken Middleton showed up and did a great job and the interviews were good but the key was the racing and it was good even with a bad outcome for me and to me a hidden star was JODY JAMIESON as his drive was a ten in the OSS GOLD with a perfect remove when Henry was going way to slow and he did not need much room or a perfect stretch drive and he put on a show for the fans and this was a rare happening at WEG and even RANDY WAPLES WAS trying to find hidden prices with his picks and that to me was his first showing that the game was not a stupid chalk show and the only dark spot was CHAD rozema as he was pure crap in my opinion but overall it was a STEPH CURRY type show and we will be back to normal i am sure in the very near future,,,,,,,,,,,,

i felt Trevor had the better horse but Jody forced him to make two moves well before the 3/4 pole
Jody can still drive at a top level when he wants to

PAP ,,,,,TREVOR drove real poor as he thought it was a monday night and he could go the famous 29 quarter with no driver knowing it and truth is in most cases the useless drivers and judges would not notice but Middleton would mention the soft second quarter steal as he is one of the few who loves the game,,,,,,

Middleton, who is a breeder and owner--often mentions fractions and is flat out wrong many times
he thinks slowing down fractions is a major advantage to the leader--when indeed all that does(many times) is turn the last quarter into a sprint and that brings the others into the race. Closers can outsprint the leader if the race is turned into a sprint., whereas stepping on the gas can eliminate the backfield quickly. Randy mentions this often and he is correct.
Not saying that was the case in that particular race last night, but watch and listen to Middleton's assumption that the leader got away with a cheap quarter or half--they get beat often. I speak from watching every Mohawk race every night all year. Ken should know better but he hasnt learned his lesson because he puts his presumptions into his race call often. Randy has perfectly explained this multiple times. Not saying the cheap/soft fraction gets them beat all the time of course, but the drivers are better off trying to bottom them out as opposed to turning it into a sprint.
The master at this was Tom Harmer with Falcon Seelster. He would often bottom them out, mathematically eliminate the entire field by flooring it as opposed to allowing the others into the race.
In last nights race--i thought it was plain and simple--Jody forced Trevor into making another move too early costing Trevor the race.
of course this is just my opinion as a gambler having never sat behind one.

A second quarter "breather " is overrated alot.. the great horses have 3 big moves in them per race. The good ones 2. If you are hellbent on leaving the gate.. put them in the dust. The great Falcon Steelster held the track record in Delaware for many years. For years he had the pacing record and Peace Corps had the trotting record. Talk about the cream of the crop.

The funny thing is the drivers seem top believe this as well. I have seen many races where the favorite took the lead and slowed the pace only to be caught by a lesser horse who was very fact over short distances.

You better believe it. Leave and put them away early if you got the horsepower. It was always a big deal during jug week when the BIG boys showed up after the racing Sunday Monday and Tuesday and took the locals to school. My Dad would always hammer on Campbell and Jack on Wednesday and Thursday. You would have Ohio horses that had been driven by Ohio drivers and then you throw one of them on or Pierce and you could guarantee an improvement. Great betting angle.
-
turning back the hands of time about 45 years or so....whoever drove My Bill Forwood understood perfectly.
he would come down from YR/RR and on sunday nights, when Liberty Bell raced their open/invitational , the race was
over at the half--he bottomed them out rather easily and the others never had a shot
My Bill Forwood would often be kicked out by Liberty Bell-yes they actually did that back then-then MBF would have to go back to NY.
i think it was a Patterson that handled MBF-but my memory isnt what it used to be
MBF was one of my favorite horses-i often would watch the races on channel 9 WOR TV on saturday nights with Stan Bergstein and Spencer Ross--MBF could compete with with FFA types-but would win by open lenghts at Liberty Bell

Sorry Pap little before my time.. but I get what your saying. For me that would be Shady Daisy whenever she raced at Scioto against the open mares.. leave them in the dust. I can never remember a horse being kicked out of a certain track.. but I do remember horses being barred from betting quite often. I ONLY turn 50 next month which is young for harness racing and horseplop.. which is a damn shame

for only being 50 you have plenty of knowledge and experience--and i can appreciate that
i am very much enjoying these conversations lately--not the norm for this site

Thanks for the compliment!! I started young as well.. going to the farm my grandparents horses were trained at when I was 4,5,6 years old.. going to Scioto and all the county fairs in Ohio watching them race. Seeing the shit grin on my Grandpa's face when one of their horses would win and getting our picture taken even though the purse was 2 grand or under. That's what got me hooked.

Being 80, I recall My Bill Forward vividly. He raced throughout the Northeast and was owned, if I recall, by people in Maine. Donald Dancer drove him often at Liberty Bell, and Freeman Parker drove him in New England. Not sure if he had a regular chauffeur in the NY Metro area. They tried to breed him, but he never threw too many top horses.

This is the best thread all year. Civil and very interesting. ;D
My 2 cents:
Agree 100% about the Sat Mohawk races. I ended up ahead (Thank you, Scotty Z) and coulda won a lot more if I spread a bit in the opening leg of the early P-5. My only complaint is the amount of time between races. Brutal.
I admired My Bill Forwood from afar. Back in the day, as you other old timers know, there was no simulcasting, computers or TV coverage. But as an avid reader of the Horseman and Fair World, I got to know and love a lot of horses from out East. MBF was among my favorites along with Mountain Skipper, To Ri Boy, Miss Conna Adios, Deep Run Frosty and Seatrain.
I had a mare who was "banded" from Chicago on 2 seperate occasions after beating the top male pacers 2 or 3 times in a row. She won several mare opens out east (YR, FHLD, M1), beat Shady Daisy at Northfield, and won at The Red Mile.
So nice to read informed opinions about racing instead all the bullshit that normally permeates Horseplop.

I loved the horseman and fair world magazine. I would get my grandfather's old issues when he was done reading them and when I got old enough and started working and making money I was a subscriber until they went under. I didnt mind the time between races.. one of their better cards this year so they wanted the most handle possible. Other tracks are way worse at post dragging. What was the name of your mare and did you ever breed her?

thanks to you and Mohawk Mac for recalling My Bill Forward
he would win two or three in a row at Liberty Bell, and then it was back to YR/RR because the races at LB were non-competitive. He was very fast and faced the toughest FFA types NY could offer-sometimes winning
brings back fond memories of when i was bold, young and healthy

Pacific Flight N. Mixed results as a broodmare. Had an undefeated filly ( 5 for 5 before breaking down) and a multiple stakes winner of over $300,000. And one of her daughters produced Down Under millionaire Chicago Bull.
Here she is beating the FFA boys once again while demolishing the world record for aged mares on a half mile track and also removing Presidential Ball as the all age overall track record holder.

I'm the fat guy in the striped shirt in the winners circle. ;D

I remember her.. thanks for posting the video. Last to first and then pulled away. I'm jealous of you.. I wish I could have owned one half that good back in the day.. I haven't owned for years and years. No money.. no funny. LOL..It's a shame your undefeated filly out of her went lame.
