So much of harness times has depended on the equipment especially the sulkies. As the materials have become lighter and stronger, the engineering improvements etc have helped the times to improve a lot. I don’t think much has changed in the thoroughbred world.

Inbreeding.  T-breds are commonly 3x3 line bred. Standardbreds are getting closer and closer and with that will come an end to speed.  If you want to know why T-breds are breaking down more now than in the past just ask....It isn't drugs!
