Per @DRFHarness Roger Huston will be on hand June 28 to call the MGM Yonkers Trot and MGM Grand Messenger.
-
Even in retirement announcer Roger Huston is a busy man. On Friday, June 28, the 81-year-old will make the six and a half hour trek from his home in western Pennsylvania to MGM Yonkers Raceway in New York to call the first legs of the Standardbred Triple Crowns – the $300,000 USD MGM Yonkers Trot and $250,000 USD (est.) MGM Grand Messenger Pace.
“I probably put 500 to 750 miles on my car each week,” said Huston, who travels from Pennsylvania to Ohio weekly to work for the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association and also fills in at Northfield Park and The Meadows as an announcer on occasion.
Huston, a member of the Communicator’s wing of the U.S. Harness Racing Hall of Fame who is also well-known as the voice of the Little Brown Jug, has called more than 184,000 races in his lifetime at 160 racetracks. While some may think Yonkers Raceway will be an addition to the list, according to Huston he actually appeared there in 1995 as part of a drivers’ challenge promotion between Yonkers, Freehold, The Meadowlands and The Meadows.
“The top four drivers at each location faced off against the hometown drivers and I went with them and called the races,” said Huston.
Huston will be able to cross one race off his bucket list on June 28 as he completes the Triple Crown six-pack. The Pacing Triple Crown consists of the Messenger, Cane and Little Brown Jug, all races Huston has called in the past. The Ohio native was able to call the Hambletonian live on NBC in 1979 at DuQuoin and has announced the Kentucky Futurity on radio, but 2024 will mark the first time he’s called the Yonkers Trot.
“I’m thrilled to add that last Triple Crown race to my long résumé and I’m really looking forward to it as much as I look forward to anything else,” said Huston, who is known for bringing energy to every call, whether it is a $4,000 claimer or the Yonkers Trot.
Both Triple Crown races will be part of a monster card at Yonkers that will also feature the New York New York Mile and Park MGM Pace.
In addition to the special guest appearance by Huston on the microphone, fans attending the races live on June 28 will be treated to an outdoor market on the track apron. An integration of the casino and track worlds will take place as patrons from both sides of the gambling world will be welcomed to enjoy special food stands, live music and other promotional items as part of a Triple Crown Fan Fest.
Yonkers Raceway conducts live racing on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays to Saturdays with a post time of 7 p.m. (EDT).

As soon as I saw 'mute' in the title, it had to be 'THE MOUTH'.
Here's hoping he stays up there. Perfect fit.
-
Hopefully the field will be small so Roger can’t totally screw up.
-
true
but isn't it longer than a mile
odds he doesn't know that and has no idea what the fractions mean
-
hopefully he'll get trapped on the GWB and then lost on the Deegan and ends up on the Island.
-
it might lower their pitiful nightly handle even more
-
Mute button for sure with that clown who does that show at oak grove. He’s gotta go
-
The worst, and keeps getting worse
This is really going to be a must listen lolololol
-
Roger is just like athletes that don’t know when to quit. He is probably addicted to the attention and loves to hear his own voice. He may have been good years ago but I cannot listen to his calls any longer.
-
Totally agree. Way past his Best By date
-
I agree with those that say it is past Roger's time. He has trouble calling the races & seeing the horses. Why to tracks feel the need to bring him in?
-
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOO
I forgot he was calling races tonight at the Hilltop.
<sad face>
-
Hearing Huston call the races tonight is giving me a flashback of listening to Biden last night

He's a name in the biz. Everybody in the states sucks. They can't get a permanent announcer at Yonkers.
Everybody is making more mistakes than ever. In the past few weeks I've seen a half dozen calls midstretch where the announcer is saying that the horse in front is clear and on his own then gets beat ... or saying a horse is coming by and never gets there. How come only the good (ones) die young? ngc3
RIP Sam

By no means a Roger fan and rarely watch any M[1] but in 1st race Warkentin called 'At the 1/2'
but it was at the 1/4..IN A 5 HORSE FIELD. Both Hall Of Famers. Reminds me of the Election ;D

Unfortunately he is headed to Goshen this weekend to call some of the Hall of Fame races. He also said he is going to call the races at 17 (yes seventeen) county fairs this summer.
I can't stand the guy but you do have to give him props he must be made of steel to survive his schedule. I'm not 100% sure but I think he told Little that he has called over 18 thousand races in his career. It can't be easy trying to memorize that many names for calls.
