With those purse's every crumb helps, except for a few stake races M1 is a dead game laddies.
-
Literally the dumbest idea ever. Take money away from those who earned it and give it to those who couldn't earn it.
-
its not much but covers gas and tolls at least
necessary given the big m has no stables on the ground
should have been done long ago
in no way will it impact those trying to win a race
but lets face it , its a rough go when you have a horse that is just competitive and draws the outside gate and might be in against one or two killers dropping down

Kinda see both sides --- Agree with Luc - should we be given out "participation trophies"
but
maybe it helps keep the smaller stables cover race day bills.
and
if it entices an extra entry -- then thats good for the gambler.
3% of lets say a $10k purse = $300 divided by 6th thru 10 is $60 hmmm that doesn't go to far....

Pays for lasix! Less $$ to pay out of pocket!

Are you sure it is not 3% to each horse 6th through last?

maybe ???
taking 15% in a 10 horse field would seem like an awfully big haircut to horse hitting the board.... But Hey $300 wouldn't be that bad if you were shipping another horse to the track --- little sore ;D lets race
-
Cracking up at anyone calling this a "participation trophy." This is a sport where 50% of the purse already goes to losers. Let's see the same people argue for 100% of purse to the winner, I'm sure you'd quiet down really quickly.
If you get a check for finishing 5th in a field of 5 (which is a full field at many tracks nowadays), you might as well pay out 6th-10th in a field of 10.
It's a good idea to keep fields full & handle high at the most recognizable track in our sport. Love or hate Gural, if you want harness racing to continue to exist, you want the Meadowlands to be successful....
-
Look at what Santa Anita is doing with their "ship and win" program and also their "starter bonus" program. A lot of incentives to race there. Why would the Meadowlands not do some of the same?
-
Gamblers will get the worst of this. Filler entries and increased no try efforts are bad for industry health. This is a short sighted bandaid
-
The meadowlands is the most advanced harness track around. It’s not what it used to be but tell me what track is? I’ll go to my grave saying the meadowlands is the greatest harness track.

The entire sport is a participation trophy…. In the race for gambling dollars the horsemens product they put on the track,,, lost… The sports books,,, slot machines,,, table games…. They won… They out competed you…. If you think the also rans in a horse race don’t deserve anything because they didn’t earn it… Give the subsidies back,,, you didn’t earn those overinflated purses…. You took from the winners,,, and gave it to yourselves,,, the losers…

I don't think purses are large enough to be sharing anything with 6-10 placing. Now , if it were Oaklawn Park, where bottom pot for a $7,500 claimer is $30,000 and allowance races start at $130,000, In conjunction with record purses, Oaklawn and the Arkansas Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association again will offer participation bonuses to owners and trainers. Owners will receive $200 for every starter during the season. Trainers will receive $250 for any starter that does not finish first, second or third.
-
With these big handles at The Big M they should be able to increase purses to offset. Draw the outside 3 weeks in a row and you might change your thinking. Great idea its not much but every bit helps.
I just assumed that they would. But who knows. It’s not a bad idea to help horseman offset shipping costs. Don’t worry, most owners will still lose their asses every year even with this change.
-
I am all for raising purses (and lowering takeout, LOL) for win through 5th. I think it attracts better horses and leads to more competitive fields in the end. Sure, you have some dreamers, but that happens anywhere. I do think paying 6 to last something is a good thing, but I get that you can't do it and attract garbage and paid tighteners. Don't make it an incentive. Make it more of an offset.
-
The amateur races pay all participants.
Now the amateur races may be filled with 5 climers and current amateur types will go into the regular ranks to get their free money.
-
I think the idea is trying to get more horses to race there all the other tracks will be opening soon so trying to get horses.
-
I would agree, ol' Wise one. But in reality, I don't think anyone would enter their horse to collect a participation stipend. Who knows, it just may be the one component that tips the scale to enter the Meadowlands vs. say, Pocohoe or Yonkers.

This is common practice in Grand Circuit at Woodbine.....but look all New York tracks take around $25 or more just to start........ from your purse check.
If you don't receive a purse check ,you will receive a bill for your starting fee in overnights in your mailbox....been going on for years............ ....

If racing in N Y you have the privilege of paying $30.78 to have your horses blood tested at their “State Of The Art” lab.

Another brilliant post
-
remember the money is not coming from bigm right out of purse pool so horse people get same share
-
How about nick salvi ,,,saying trainers are working on deals and need that money,,,,what top trainers work on deals,,,their deal is bill on the 1st and pay by the 3rd,,,,remember the most expensive thing in the game is cheap help,,,if that trainer was that good he’d be charging a bill not a deal ,,,salvi keeps that job cause he is cheap help
-
alot of monti bottom feeders will show up ,bring a trailer load get $200 apiece
-
CAW teams need full fields to maximize their edge
Gural needs CAW teams to maintain handle numbers so that he has evidence that thw state subsidy is working.
It's scandalous and gamblers suffer

Gural does things right. It might not be a lot of money but something is better then nothing

If you are a good enough handicapper you should beat the CAW every time. They only play the odds not the horses

If you are a good enough handicapper you should beat the CAW every time. They only play the odds not the horses
The design is that they analyze final pools and can fire hundreds of bets instantly to smooth out any underpaid combinations or straight win bets based on deep analytics. If the CAW operates at 1% long term profit before rebates, no matter how good of a gambler you are, you are better off if they aren't there

Now you'll see even more cheap races and more cheap horses. Some guys will load up a trailer load and enter even if they have no chance of finishing in the top five. I'll take an average of a $500 stipend to enter to race. So he makes a quick $3.000 minus some paddocks ( which he'll do most) and some lasix( if needed). Curious about what other horsemen say when their horse ( who is a legit contender) doesn't get in for the fill-in has a better preference date. Should be interesting to see how this plays out. At least they are trying something. I did notice that it's a test.
-
Looks like a reward to finish poorly. I thought the reason of racing was to win except if your josh marks out east. They kicked that guy for winning , actually it was Gareth Dowse who fell on the sword.

Two nights a week racing
trouble filling cards so they use amateur driver races and freehold horses
Gural picks and chooses who is allowed there
pretty much worthless until stakes season
the "handle" is a mirage when they give CAWs the signal for pennies
I could go on, but why bother?
