Ira waddling in his Jesus sandals to call dibs on the last end cut of prime rib in the Lincoln Room buffet. He was over in the admin building in Langley's office snitching on Tetrick after he lost his last $2 on the pick 4. He had tears in his eyes as he wolfed down that end cut. Once his crocodile tears stopped he went to the grill to swipe $20 out of Cindy's purse.
RIP Balmoral Park

Maywood Park  1960's
Men's club house washroom.
Cigarette smoke so heavy you couldn't breathe.
I am standing four deep in line waiting for my turn at a  urinal.
Man at the head of the line was so engrossed in reading his  program that he was pissing on the floor and his shoes.

all you needed was a few million bucks and an 8 ball or 2. Sparked a line on the bathroom sink 2nd floor mensroom. She was wild in those days. Her old man Pat was souzed in the dining room before the double most nights.
Good times. Dolbee swore he  11.bz :1 11.tb her but I called b.s. on him

In the early 1990s my good friend and his girlfriend went to Sportsman Park. When he returned he told me it was in a scary neighborhood and inside the track he saw bum after bum with a few actually throwing up on the apron of the grandstand. At that point I took Sportsman Park off my bucket list.

Washington Park: Watching Try's First (free legged pacer) win the opening night feature in 2:05.4 and getting laid for the first time a few hours later.

Aurora Downs: Celebrating New Year's Eve with two good friends and eating pizza at Jim and Pete's in Oak Park after the races.

Arlington Park: Jogging a friend's pacer at 6:00 A.M. in pitch blackness.  I was the only person on the track.  Stone silence except for the rhythmic clip clop clip clop of hooves.  Surreal experience.

Maywood Park: Getting an awesome  11.bz after the races in my car parked behind the ship-in barns across 5th Avenue.  I was surprised what an aphrodesiac the faint aroma of horse manure can be on a warm Spring evening.

Sportsman's Park:  Paddock interview with Eleanor and Mike LaChance (my horse's driver) for her TV show.  Unfortunately, my guy finished up the track.

Hawthorne Race Course:  Saturday doubleheader in minus 15-23 degree temps.  20 great races and a toasty 72 degrees in the grandstand.

Watching my uncle buy a horse in the mid 90s, that was racing at Maywood, and seeing the horse go several seconds slower at Yonkers.  Convinced me that Maywood was a short 1/2 mile track.

"A Chicago Original"
She dressed like a hooker, but she wasn't.
Google "Racetrack Rosie" (Dancer Rosemarie Black) to see.
One of my favorite SP Park winners circle pictures is with her.
Her shoulder nicely tucked up in my armpit and me looking down at her big chocolate breasts.
No! She did not smell bad!
No! She was never in any driver's room.

I'm much younger, but I'll never forget seeing Captaintreacherou s win the American National in 2014 at Balmoral. Walked through the barns earlier that night and saw Foiled Again and all the champions at that time. Very cool considering I grew up in a time where the best horses raced in Chicago only a few times a year.

I know it's T-breds, but people don't talk enough about Two Phil's nearly winning the Kentucky Derby last year.

Would've been so huge for Illinois racing to have the 2023 Kentucky Derby winner trained and stabled at Hawthorne. Add on that last year's Preakness was the weakest ever... he could've had a shot at the Triple Crown

Was the best horse in that class and ran the best race that day, but loyalty to the Illinois jockey (Loveberry) was his downfall. So close to something so big
