Only 1 horse in the entire history of Harness Racing in NY Metro area ever rose to be a top FFA/Levy/Pacing Derby type winning horse AFTER being in $10,000 claimers out of town. Who was it! He was as tough a customer as they came in those days.
Small hint - forget anything having to do with Chicago racing
-
well FIGHT THE FOE was in for 4 claimers and won the open in ny
-
Sorry Fug, I think I knew that a long time ago, but along with a crapload of other stuff I don't remember now. I'll make a wild guess and say Nickawampus Leroy but that's just a guess.
I did find out that Dan Patch raced in claimers before no one would race against him, and he did only time trials at the end of his career.
-
I remember FTF and Leroy well but I’ll go with Docs Fella!
-
I’ll go with Fight the Foe
-
To Ri Boy or Myakka Prince. Would have said Leroy but someone already did -- loved Leroy.
-
PH Supercam did similar recently.
-
To all contestants, it was Fight The Foe His last claiming line was in a 10 at Liberty Bell. Rose to crush a star studded Levy field of 11 horses at RR with Merit Dokey in 1982 among other triumphs. And yes he was in even cheaper claimers too. Thanks to all who played.

I have kind of a reverse question…what trotter won the Hambletonian and wound up at smaller tracks in low level claiming races?
-
Shiaway St. Pat.
-
Spider Blue Chip won a Hambo Elimination, Breeders Crown, etc and ended up a 15 to 17,500 claimer.
-
Shiaway St. Pat.
Correct
-
Phil Tully and Bob Boni bought St Pat for him to solely to get him off the track. They saved the champ from any more racing abuse. When he got real old he was sent to a Michigan farm to live his final days out.
-
What 3 year old trotter was in a claimer with a tag of $52,500 just 27 days before winning the Hambo?
-
just to let you know he was in for 4k claimers with phil tafone and he took him to the top
-
Flirth?
-
Was Phil training him when he won Opens, A levy and races at the Big M? My crazy memories tell me Luca Derrico had him for a stretch
-
I remember being a kid in 1979 at RR in the fall and he beat a stellar field including Nickylou and Wizrad Almahurst and Rambling Willie with John Campbell who was leading driver that year for the fall meet at RR Thrills and chills for me It was an open pace
-
He lost him to either Dave or Steve Elliot I think at the pinicle...I think...long time ago....but Phil Def. Got him to top of mountain from 4 claimers ...
-
I see Luca did have him in 82

Historic Freight

whew, I can hold off on the memory pills a bit longer, TY I liked Phil Tafone. He had other successes, of course.
-
Historic Freight
Correct. There was a rumor back then that Dave Rovine put a claim in on him but the claim ended up being voided because one of the owners wasn't licensed. Less than a month later, he wins the Hambo for Skip and Benny.

I remember Skip Lewis at the Meadowlands riding around in blue Caddy that said HAMBO84 His barn was right across from where I worked I was in 13B

That was him. He wasn't the friendliest guy around, that is for sure.

Being 22 years old at the time, I also remember he had a series of adorable, Swedish looking, blonde grooms, each of which had bigger tits than the next one
Didn't know much of his personality, but he did seem to "swagger" Seems like yesterday
-
Always used Benny...had that sat nite open horse..American???? Chance?

Just watched it OMG TY! Had a tear and a twinkle in my eye. I am in the grandstand there somewhere....... Somebody owes us all 40 years.....
-
Oh.. this one is later I was referring to his Levy win with JC when he came for the fall meet and won like 75 races It was 79 but I appreciate seeing this one too. FTF stayed at a high level for years remarkable Went with my parents and grandparents Nathans afterwards a great night for a 16 year old suffering with harness fever.
-
Skip Lewis was a miserable prick
-
So I guess he wasn't fooling with his harem of grooms ;D
