Title: First standardbred to make $1 Million appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show
Post by: winky on October 07, 2023, 07:25:06 AM
Cardigan Bay with Stanley Dancer.

Retired after earning $1 Million in a ceremony at Yonkers Raceway.

Cardigan Bay is another famous standardbred pacer and can legitimately claim to being one of the world's best race horses in any style of racing! He was the ninth horse to win $1 million U.S. dollars...the first 8 winners were all thoroughbreds.

Cardigan Bay was born in New Zealand on the first of September, 1956. He was beloved by his owners, trainers and riders and affectionately called Cardy. After winning 29 of 47 races in New Zealand and Australia, he was purchased for $100,000 by a syndicate  in the U.S. with the agreement that he would be retired in New Zealand. He raced in the U.S.from 1964 through 1968.

The plain bay colt, crossed the $1 million mark at the Freehold Raceway in New Jersey and was retired right after that in a Sept. 1968 ceremony in Yonkers, New York. Before returning to New Zealand where he spent the rest of his life on a stud farm, Cardy actually appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show...I know, most of you weren't alive for that Sunday night show but I was. (And I watched the Beatles 1964 performance and screamed all the way through it!)

Below is an interesting Youtube video of one of his races. Watch closely as, right at the end on the back stretch, there is a crash and horses and sulkies and drivers go everywhere. One driver flies through the air and lands in the lap of another driver and the horse carries both of them across the finish line!

Cardigan Bay was so famous and such a national hero in New Zealand that they actually made a postage stamp with his image on it!

Cardigan Bay died peacefully in his sleep in March of 1988 at the age of 31. Well, at least that was the official word!

1  Ever see those enormous B/w finish line photos of Cardigan Bay and Bret Hanover from the back to back dead heat duels they staged there? They hung for years in the room behind the kitchen approaching the card rooms.

2 Ever see the episode from the 70s in color of What's My Line featuring Jackie Ingrassia. She is number 2 and in her colors. I have seen it twice randomly but I cant find it anywhere even though I have hundreds of episodes saved. There is also one featuring Del Miller from the 60s. Great episode. He is himself on camera too. pleasant, easy going, smiling. That one I have saved.

I can't copy the link -- but if you search -- Del Miller Today Show Roosevelt Raceway -- you'll see a 9 minute interview with the great Del Miller (sitting in a race bike) from 1960. Quite a treat.

You guys ever see the I Love Lucy episode where she and Fred own a racehorse, she drives it and it is filmed at RR? Daytime race and it is overcast. The race seems to last like 5 mins and drivers come alongside her and they scream at each other and glare.

If anybody has the old dvd collection and wants to look it up here is where it appeared.  No links to the episode available.

Lucy Wins a Racehorse is the fourth episode of the first season of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour. It first aired 3 February 1958 on CBS.

Summary
Lucy wins a race horse for Little Ricky. In order to keep the horse, Lucy enters the horse in a race at Roosevelt Raceway with the help of Betty Grable.

I hated Ed Sullivan who was a pompous a-hole who screwed up more names of guests than any tv host I know. More than Ed I hated that stupid Italian mouse that probably caught rabies kissing Sullivan all the time. That being said I am old enough to recall the shows where  harness people were occasionally mentioned. Too bad Cardigan Bay didn’t poop on Ed’s shoes.

I would see Ed often in the Cloud Casino.  He gambled quite a bit and was very friendly with a sketchy "trainer/driver" (use that loosely here) by the name of Michael Deutsch.  I recall when I was jogging a horse back at RR, he went zooming by with one that looked sharp as hell.  Next week I was sitting on the rail and saw him again.  Horse had been lame as hell and hadn't raced for quite a while.  2 weeks later he was entered and won with Deutsch driving him for a big price (and the pools were huge back then.)  Last time I ever saw that horse, Grand Flyer.  Maybe Fug remembers Deutsch??

I do, but only in name. Hard to honestly say I have vivid memories of him, but definitely know the name. Dark blue colors??

Ed Sullivan used to own  a horse named Twinkle Hanover N.

Ed Sullivan gave many musical groups and comedians

alot of exposure.

Certainly a pioneer.
