Fastest 3 year old in history and STILL we haven't seen his bottom. Glad I lived to see a colt like this one. Awe inspiring. Glad he beat my pre - race prediction by a tick! LOL
-
If they retire him after 3 yo season, he may not better the mile today. I think he is a super horse (in the class of the top 10 all-time) but today was 90 degrees +, still wind and stablemate cutting the fractions. Would love to see him race at 4.

This, but being they are or were going for the record, I guess it's a lock they retire him. Sad, but imagine how fun racing would be if these champion 3yold raced until they were at least 5. But $$$$ talks.

Whoever you are, you're a great addition to Plop and one of the best and most knowledgeable posters we've seen.
I consider you the Mr. Miyagi of horseplop.
A few questions:
1. How much more is there to get to his bottom? His last quarter ... to me it looked like he was pacing as fast possible. Would whip/other encouragement made him go any faster?
2. Track/weather matters, right? Were conditions close to - if not - perfect for his big mile?
3. The trip ... does he go faster with solid competition right next to him from, say, the 5/16 to the 1/8?
4. What do you think he goes in a Time Trial? Some others:
-1965(?) Bret Hanover 153.3
-1971(?) Steady Star 152.0
-1980 Niatross 149.1
Going into Niatross Oct 1, 1980 TT, the any Age/Sex WR in a race was Niatross' 152.4 at Syracuse in 1980 (? I think)
Steady Star was very fast but certainly, by race record - not an all time great.
How fast would Confederate go TT?
What do you believe Miki or Bulldog would have done in a TT under perfect conditions?
In any event, Confederate deserves our attention and if your time allows, please let us know more of your thoughts..

Very true. Retire him when he's at the top of his game -- or close to the top by season's end. Too much of a risk to bring him back at four and possibly cheapen his value, in addition to losing a full year of stud duty.

Hey Calhoun - Very flattering words. I think I better call myself the Sensei! Just kidding. My wife said nice ego stroke.
I will answer your questions in depth soon. Gotta run some errands. Look for an update later this morning. Thanks again! Btw I am not the "KING", George Anthony, but knew him well. Solid citizen!

He hit his bottom yesterday. He will go to the stub barn with that record. That race yesterday was a TT , his stablemate put up insane #’s for absolutely no reason and he still didn’t crack 46 which is what they were after.

Be interesting to see if there is much more time he can drop.... Yesterday was a perfect storm, great weather, fast track, stablemate to setup the fractions....
And I am not sure I buy into he was underwraps.... In the photo on the USTA site you can see Tetrick is fully laid out with the lines loose on hips.... But we haven't seen him pushed much this year - so who know's how much more there is.
-
TT's are a thing of the past, worked for fillies needing a record to go to breeding shed and horses they just wanted a record on. Does anybody think his value is going to rise that much more if he goes any faster in a TT. Also this horse is trained by the best at peeking a 3 yr old. If they have the ability he'll get it out of them.

I was there. Tim was silent, shook the right line halfway down the stretch and never pulled the ear plugs. Pelling warmed the horse up after the 6th. Jogged two miles and went a trip in 35-40.

Questions 1, 2, 3 combined - I do not believe we have seen his bottom. To my definition "bottom" is not only about speed. It is about emptying everything out that God gave that horse, leaving nothing on the track. I don't think I have ever seen him extended. He paces himself off the gate, doesn't explode when tipped, he ranges and grinds and then hits that rarest of gears for about an 1/8. For those of you obsessed with speed, I do believe 1.45.2 is easily within his grasp.
Yes, yesterday was indeed a form of a TT and the conditions were idyllic. I agree with many of you that TTs are outdated and unnecessary ( good point about Steady Star ), a fast horse, not a racehorse, just like Its Fritz. There is sooooo much speed today and sooooo much daytime racing that TTs are unnecessary. Most horses are racing at extreme speed already.
I also believe that a Time Trial wouldn't do Confederate that much good anyway mostly because he is such a rare and unusual talent in the way he uses his speed. Consider, given the speed obsessed era in which we now race, the fastest 3 year old ever has no gate speed and rarely even brushes to the lead and doesn't dictate his own fractions. Absolutely bizarre, but that's what makes him so dynamic and commands our attention.
Side note - major hats off to a remarkable job by Brett Pelling. I always believed most horses run on 8 week cycles, good, bad, mediocre Confederate has looked fresh, ultra sound, attentive, happy and enthusiastic every time we see him for at least 3 months now. Brett might say this one is easy as apparently he takes very good care of himself as a horse.
Bulldog hanover - I must admit I found him mildly interesting but not compelling. Always B Miki - now this will sound weird. He reminded me of Wiggle It Jiggle It. Both very fast but at the same time looked like they were "under stress", like thay could come apart at any moment. Please don't ask me to explain, it's just a vibe they gave off and my intuition.
-
Again, yesterday was a TT , in a full field 3rd over with numbers favoring the horse on the lead , he’s not going to pace a last 1/4 in 24 n change or a last 3/8 in 37. He will go to the stud barn with that mark. Also I don’t think the Sweet Lou line is going to over take the SBSW stud lines in the breeding barn.
-
I agree it will be very hard to create a scenario where he or any horse in the near future will see the lower part of 1.45 in a full field if they race the way he does. But if he ever brushed off a wicked quarter, blasted to the lead hit that extreme gear and could carry it for a half, this horse could easily flirt with 1.45. Cmon , the fucking earplugs haven't been out and he is the fastest 3 year old ever and the 3rd fastest standardbred ever.
-
I don’t think the Sweet Lou line is going to over take the SBSW stud lines in the breeding barn.
They don't have to. They are perfect crosses and probably the golden cross of the future.

Doesn't have to overtake the SBSW line. Time will tell which SBSW son will extend the line and leave a potent siring son to carry on. Don't forget Bettor's Delight -- will Tall Dark Stanger be his answer? How about the Western Ideal line -- will Always B Miki be the one to leave a potent siring son? Or will some dominant outcross sire come out of nowhere like SBSW and Sweet Lou did? Time will tell.

hasnt reached the bottom? i dont know time will tell but he had a rabbitt and a short field who couldnt compete.it sure looked like they were doing everything in their power to get record.i mean stablemate setting wicked fractions

No one expected anything but that scenario. i am saying he hasn't even been extended. Fucking earplugs havent been popped all year, Cmon.

Any competent ownership group that wanted to promote their future stallion would have done exactly the same thing. World Record equals larger syndication price equals larger stud fee. And this World Champ isn't done.
-
Absolutely. he can print money now. Many, many millions.

100% spot on.
This isn't even in my top 500 efforts of all time. He'll be a great bet against when it matters.
-
Seriously, are we supposed to take you seriously?
-
Rewatch NA Cup final, Confederate, 3rd over with numbers being dictated by a horse trying to win , not set up speed for his stable mate, Comfedrate came up a nose short.
-
Records are made to be broken. There we be another horse which will break his record.
-
Seriously, are we supposed to take you seriously?
Everybody has their own opinion. That used to be the beauty of betting on these races. Most see each race very differently.
-
If he raced as a four yr old against full fields he would get exposed HUGE! He has ZERO gate speed and he can't do it on the front end. I bet he would have a hell of a time beating :49 in a time trial. He has NEVER won on the front end. Wait till he gets in a twelve horse field at Lexington and comes 3rd or 4th over with dull flow. Against this crop of rats he can do it. You have three players in this crop. Confederate, It's My Show, & Seven Colors. I think if you have Seven Colors first over and Confederate is 3rd or 4th over at Lex he gets smoked. He has been extremely lucky with how these trips have worked out. When the trip didn't work he got beat. He's not a handy horse at all and everyone including Timmy knows it. He's a insanely fast stalker but he can't do it on the front and things have to go his way or he will wind up short. My guess is your gonna see him four more times and then he's done. Lex for SS Final. Then probably the first week at Lex and skip second week. Go to Indiana for BC elim and Final and then retired.
-
and one last parting thought. You ask any real expert on what it takes to make a great stud and they will tell you one thing! They have to be able to win on the front end. Name one Super Sire that didn't win on the front end? I'll get crickets on this one......

Yes, he came up a nose short, but for the last 1/8 he was pacing out of his skin and Tim was upset with himself for not getting his path and cranking him up earlier.
Also, I noted Steady Star's name. Please remember that he was free-legged. When everyone asks how a horse like Confederate can go faster, the clear answer would be to let his legs get extended as far as possible by racing free legged; however a horse has to be consistently traIned that way to be safe.
-
The setup was perfect for him to break the record. Inside post, designated rabbit, good cover, small field ,fastest clay track, perfect weather and excellent driver whose knows how to drive him and when to pull. His acceleration is exceptional. But that doesn't mean he couldn't lose again in a full competitive field. Too many variables in a horse race to predict that. Very few horses I've seen were great enough in their era to overcome all these variables. Niatross stands out.

You are 1000% percent right SS. I am just so sick and tired of arguing with the handful of negative assholes on here who are John Campbell, Lew Williams and Billy Haughton all rolled into 1 from their keyboards and think harness racing began the day they became aware of it. If they and their speed obsessed minds refuse to accept that CONFEDERATE absolutely DWARFS ANYTHING WEARING HOPPLES TODAY and should be accepted as an all time great already, simply because he does not leave the gate, let them.
I like blogging on here and the "friends" I have made. Not gonna go 15 rounds with the anymore. I know what's what and that's good enough.

Fuguzzi, thanks to you and many others for a good thread up until its' inevitable descent.
I hope the fall Lex race is on a day conducive to fast times.
There is nothing better to me than seeing the best racing on a fast big track.

Thanks buddy, yes, inevitable descent - very well put.
agreed about Lex - still i will miss seeing Confederate in the Jug.
Maybe some people on here are pissed at the syndicate for taking the horse from Brown and giving it to Brett.
I don't follow everything as close as many of you, because for one, I dont gamble, but it seems to me that many of Brian Browns solid 2 year olds dont come back nearly as good at 3 if they remain in his barn. Is that a factor?
-
Not a ? of him being one of the best 3 yrs , if not the best this year but all time let’s let the year play out. I’ve noticed when your opinion gets soundly refuted
you get a little sensitive. Confederate s biggest advantage is he has 3 stable mates and he still didn’t crack 46 on the perfect day. You act like it’s just a given he’s going to break the record. On the history of the short 100 yrs or so only one has.

This is too easy.
North American Cup eliminatons 6/10/23 -- Confederate wire to wire 1:48.3 -- first quarter 26.4 -- last quarter 26.3.
What's with all the Confederate naysayers -- this horse is the real deal.

Not about sensitivity. Just get frustrated when people come up with minutia nd nonsense, like Rowtruck tellin me he knew Bythemissal was sick watching him from home on TV - plain stupid.
That aside, I think you miss my overall thrust. I am not a participant in the neo - obssesion with speed and lifetime marks in this business which currently prevails. IN FACT I BELIEVE SPEED HAS DESTROYED THIS BUSINESS. It certainly has wiped out value for the average gambler. I couldn't care less actually what his final lifetime mark is. Only the powers at Diamondcreek do. I am enthralled by what i know as a horseman Confederate can do. I have seen horses like him before - the whole package, the awareness, the ability to care for oneself as he does. the gear that only a rare few pacers are ever gifted with. IF he could sustain that gear for an entire mile or even most of one, he would pace 45 flat - no doubt in my mind. But I am about racehorses who know their job and refuse to lose. that's a CONFEDERATE as it was a NIATROSS, NIHILATOR, SBSW, MATT"S SCOOTER, ARTSPLACE, CAMSCARDSHARK...A lmost 50 years, O/T, I never drove a competitive race for $$, and I have only scene a very small handful move like he does last 3/16ths - he is electric. He is a throwback horse in a racing world not completely designed for him. and, if he was turned out for good TODAY, he will always be an all time great.

What's with the naysayers? Two things - they hate horses without gate speed and they hate Bret.

This statement couldn't be more accurate. Maybe it takes being a trainer to spot these things -- I've sat behind hundreds of plugs. Watch the Hempt race -- you can see this horse literally shift gears halfway down the stretch. That's what makes this horse something special.
-
correct
that is why sweet lou is stepping up , getting lots of quality mares and will get more as captain mares come into the breeding shed
-
TYVM for your support. I love how he continues to gain speed and momentum last stages and draw off even when there is no one left to race - Meadowlands Pace, Cane Pace.
Horseman know tmbz1

Bottom line is he couldn’t over come a 3 in trip to get up in the NA Cup

Do you sleep with Linda? Are you Howard Talyor. Timmy said if knew what he had he woulda moved him a step or two earlier. The wire is the wire and yes, IMS survived. Confederate was moving twice as fast as IMS. He had an awful 3rd over dead flow and had to swing and gain a head of steam with no momentum. Airborne to the wire.
-
You’re making him out to be a super horse, and when he need to be super he came up short. If he’s forced into that same trip again we will see if he gets up.
To be considered the greatest as you are stating he should have got up there.
-
Ok, so no horse can ever lose and be an all time great. I see. thanks for the education. Hmmm. Nihilator lost to Armbro Dallas. Niatross lost twice, including the "fall". We know what happened to SBSW. Riyadh danced along with protection and still gave it up with triple Crown on the line to a relentless Life Sign in that 93 fantastic jug. We know the trials and tribulations of a young Artsplace. A brilliant Beach Towel who retried at the time as the richest pacer ever, lost to Jake and Elwood twice and almost couldn't beat him in the MP. see where I am going with this. The list is endless. Bret Hanover lost races too.........
All time greats do lose races
Horses are managed differently today, race less, extreme speed and on and on The way top horses are raced today, 12 to 15 wins are like 25 to 30 from my day
But what do i know anyway.
-
First off Niatross never lost heads up , made a break spotted the field 15 came back finished 4 to make the final and crushed in the final. Other loss he went over the hub rail.
All the other horse you mentioned didn’t dodge anyone. Why did CANNIBAL not go into the $80,000 KY SS and race against Confederate? I will save you the thought process, because he has the same owner and he just hammered Its My Show the week before. The same Its My Show Confederate couldn’t beat. Linda’s not dodging any with IMS. Can’t call him the greatest when they’re dodging horses.
-
Wait till the end of the year and see. Sooner than later they will hook up again, My bet is on Pelling and TT. Let's see if IMS can beat Cannibal, the Jug should be interesting.
-

Yes he broke and yes he fell. You forget something when he fell. I was there in person, by the way. It was a split card on my brothers Bday - July 5th and ,many of us had to wait to get into the paddock because he fell. Back to what i was saying, he was already being passed when he fell because Clint started caving his ribs, Before that Niatross had never been touched with a whip. He was also very sick with fever and supposedly his red blood cell count was off. Bottom line, he still lost.
Funny thing about this game, sometimes a horse can put down their best performance in DEFEAT. I think SBSW losing the M Pace was maybe his greatest race - that's just me.
And if you read carefully, I totally acknowledge that horses are managed waaaaay differently now. I despise the "dodging", overlapping ownerships and everything else about. I am old school and yes everyone raced everyone, everywhere. everytime.
A real jug would feature Confederate, Cannibal, It's My Show, Seven Colors, Redwood Hanover, etc.
-
Also if cannibal did race in the elim, no matter who beat who, he and Confederate would make the final 2 weeks later and then neither would be in the Jug just days later, right? It's business after all. This way one goes to each. I would send Cannibal to the Jug too. So would you!
-
BTW, on the subject of Niatross. The true measure of the greatness of that horse can be found in his ability to overcome his trainer/driver, his assistant trainer and his wife, the horses groom. A hillbilly crew. Then there was the greedy owners syndicate of Guida/Finder who did all they could to screw the old lady Elsie Berger out of her money. Not surprising, especially where Morty Finder is concerned - degenerate gambler.
-

They've kept CONFEDERATE and CANNIBAL apart the entire year with the exception of the Meadowlands Pace -- and we know what happened there -- Confederate ran off in 47 and Cannibal didn't pick up a check.
So I must be missing your point -- do you feel Cannibal is the better horse? Yes, he beat IMS the week before, but the week before that IMS was an easy winner over Cannibal in 47.1 Also, I believe Cannibal went in the Commenwealth division and not the SS because he was shooting for a lifetime mark also. He won but unfortunately the lifetime mark didn't work out for him.

Here's my unsolicited two cents on the colt. He's FAST, especially in a single quarter situation. I think it's pretty clear he's the best 3yo pacer this year. Really a pleasure to watch race.
That said, I don't care about his race this week. It was a glorified time trial. He should win the final but no one will be out on a suicide mission to cut out fractions for him with that kind of $$ on the line, so may not better his record. I can only assume he is done after this year.
I find it hard to put him in the conversation of best ever right now. He may very well prove me wrong by the end of the year.
I have not stood next to the horse but he does not look big. Right, wrong or indifferent, people like a big strong yearling and I don't imagine he will throw one. He will command in the stud barn initially, but I guess we will see how it goes if he puts out a bunch of tiny tots.

I have not stood next to the horse but he does not look big. Right, wrong or indifferent, people like a big strong yearling and I don't imagine he will throw one. He will command in the stud barn initially, but I guess we will see how it goes if he puts out a bunch of tiny tots.
Albatross was not a big horse.

Here's my unsolicited two cents on the colt. He's FAST, especially in a single quarter situation. I think it's pretty clear he's the best 3yo pacer this year. Really a pleasure to watch race.

Some excellent points here ty I wouldn't call him big or small but that's a matter of perspective.. He reminds me a great deal of Matt's Scooter, whose stall I've actually been in. I have touched Matt's Scooter under supervision of his groom. Amazing specimen. I've never seen a neck or airway on ahorse in my life, like I did on Matt's
Yes, time will eventually tell and some of the greatness I see in him is still in the future. It's a shame he will only race 2 more times So fleeting.

Yes, if you have the time in the near future- please let us know more of your insightful thoughts about anything (harness related or other)
We need to hear more from the ones who have been there & done that.
Only if time allows

Rewatch NA Cup final, Confederate, 3rd over with numbers being dictated by a horse trying to win , not set up speed for his stable mate, Comfedrate came up a nose short.
Remember SBSW ?? Where is Ron Pierce when we need him ??

Bottom line is he couldn’t over come a 3 in trip to get up in the NA Cup
You must of missed the Meadowlands Pace. Last 1/8 it looks like the rest were tied to a post
