A true Mid-west Legend!
He didn't get the name Cannonball by taking back and sitting in a hole.

I remember him sending Jim King down the road at Aurora Downs and was leading by many lengths and he finished last. At least you got a cheap thrill with Cannonball. RIP to an Aurora Downs legend.

About ten or so years ago Cannonball made one of his few trips to Hawthorne.
Cannonball was now in his mid seventies.
Casey Leonard is just now getting top catch drives.
Casey has the favorite owned by Phil Langley from the rail.
Cannonball leaves out of there with a twenty to one shot and easily gets to the front.
Casey gets away third with the favorite.
All us old times are thinking DON"T DO IT Casey Don't to it.
Casey's dad is thinking Don't do it son.
Phil Langley is thinking don't do it young man.
Casey did it. Pulled at the quarter on Cannonball.
Cannonball hung him out to dry the rest of the mile.
Casey learned what Langley and all us old times knew.
You don't pull early on The Cannonball!
