I have finally given up on Illinois. Any recommendations for a small time owner to buy yearlings in this fall. I'm leaning towards Minnesota and New York.

EVERYONE IS LEAVING INDIANA AND GOING TO OHIO AND KENTUCKY. USED TO BE REALLY GOOD AT HOOSIER BUT IT ENDED LAST YEAR. OHIO IS HUGE PURSE MONEY EVEN FOR OVERNIGHT HORSES. THAT IS THE BEST PLACE RIGHT NOW. INDY LOST THE MOMENTUM. STILL NOT A BAD PLACE BUT OHIO AND KENTUCKY ARE WAY BETTER, EASIER RACING AND TRIPLE THE PURSE MONEY.

Try Massachusetts! Only a handful to race against and they race in late September and early October! You might be able to find NY bred and foaled in Massachusetts and you both Sires Stakes! 2 for the price of 1!

Harness in kentucky?
Yes, the 'New' Oak Grove and the 'Old' Red Mile!

Illinois has turned into a real shit show. Anyone considering buying and Illinois Bred yearling needs their heads examined. Two year olds at Springfield are racing for $4,500. It's virtually impossible to make a profit with such a limited racing schedule for 2 and 3 year olds. Every state near Illinois has a much better stakes program. Just looking at those stake programs in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Minnesota, Michigan and even Iowa makes owning an Illinois Bred 2 and 3 year old a very difficult proposition.

Forget NY.. 5 out of seven tracks are 1/2 mile and one is unraceable.. 2 year old races start way too early . The outfit the fund hired to run the program know nothing about harness racing. Breeders ran it for years and did a great job. Yearlings that are also Ky. Eligible sell at 25% premium. How much more do you need ?

Ohio purses are way up, but so is yearling prices especially Seasides. If you are going to buy I would go to the Ohio Select Sale. You are going to pay a premium at the Lexington sale because they are the last available. Also remember , along with high purses comes the competition. The sires stakes competition will be fierce. Burkes and the other large stable know where the money is and their bullseye is right on Ohio. There were 184 2yo colt yearlings nominated to the sires stakes this year. Only 9 will make the championship. So if your looking for a fair level horse probably Ohio offers the best opportunity with the most fairs, but if you want to step up to a higher level it won't be easy to compete and prices are high to find a good one.

No matter where you go, what state Sire Stakes program or, what you spend, your chances of a + ROI are negligible. Unless you become a partner in one of these high power stables earning a + ROI is more of a dream than a plan.

Agree, basically your buying a lottery ticket. Odds are high you won't breakeven unless you get real lucky. And more money spent doesn't buy you more luck.

Are we still on this? Ohio and KY. who ever said NJ is a developing program forgets that NJ was there gone, started over failed and back again. Don't waste the effort in NJ.
-
well maybe you should re think that one
-
I would buy one close to home. I had NY breds and it was a blast going to the barn, jogging them , hanging with the carnies.
-
It is a lot of fun, Yonk. A little different today. If you are looking to be in the NYSS 2 and 3 year old arena and have a fair chance to earn, you must buy a Chapter 7. On the pacing side it looks more and more you need to buy a Huntsville. American Ideal is still getting it done but, his peak has passed.
The game just keeps getting tougher for the guy who buys a couple and hopes to earn out.

We got it all wrong. Yesterday, New York Racing Association announced a 30+ increase in purses for NY breds at the upcoming Saratoga meet. No, a NY bred maiden will go for $136,500. A winners of one will go for $149,500. Also, all breeders awards apply to NYS breds in non state breed races.
The NYS Harness Sire Stakes program has been broken for years. It now breeds less than 1,000 mares a year, about 35% of what they did before VLT money. NY T-Bred program is and has been growing.

Kentucky has to be part of the eligibility, especially with the new 25% purse increase.
