Walner will never be a top sire. His first crop of 93 only has 34 winners who have already won over a million dollars and has about a dozen who would already be considered open types.

Get rid of the Excelsior Program and go back to Late Closer and NYSS

I agree get rid of the excelsior pregame just have the Sire Stakes and the late closers that's it.

Maybe the Excelsior program can raced non betting. They are more for the owners to get a chance to recoup their investment. It is an important part of the breeders program to keep people interested in taking a shot with state bred animals. We all know what these animals are worth at age 4.
It works very well in In. and Ohio. People have an opportunity to race and earn if their long term investment is not "open" stake quality. But, to card them as betting events will not work for the gambler.

2 year old trot races and amateur driving races are carded in the middle of most marquee events that have guaranteed pools and usually ruin the bet for most gamblers.

Correct me if I’m wrong but if they go back to the way it was they would still have the Stakes the late closer and the fairs. Plenty of opportunities their. Everyone I talk to hates this excelsior bologna.

I think the old excelsior series had a money earning cap for the money made as a 2 year old. . As with all of racing, the big stables / owners rule. If a trainer has 2 of the top class horses there is usually 2 divisions and the 2 never race each other until the finals. There should be an open draw. If they both draw in the same race, so be it.. There is not much they can do about the SS races but the conditions for the Empire races can be changed. As they are now its sometimes nuts. Last night at Yonkers a non betting “A” went in 52 and a piece. BUT….. NY has dropped so far behind in their racing being the number of races have dropped to keep the purses up and the majority of the tracks in NY are half mile . Breeders are choosing other states as The sire selection in NY is very limited for top end sires.

ITS A BUSTED PROGRAM DOING NOTHING TO GAIN INTEREST BY FANS OR GAMBLERS.
IMO IF THERE ISN’T 3 FULL FIELDS THAT IS ONLY 24 HORSES RACING FOR THE TOP PRIZE THEN THE MONEY SHOULD BE REFUNDED AND USED TO FIX POTHOLES OR ADD TRAFFIC SIGNALS AT DANGEROUS INTERSECTIONS.
