Who is pumped for the Illini Classic sale? Is the lack of confirmed dates going to keep prices down? Higher or lower than last year?
-
Who is your sale topper? Over 40k?
-
Every year there is a upbeat message to get prices higher. Can't believe there is such this year with Arlington. Slots ddont appear to be up and going to next year maybe Sept? Owners can only take so much bs I can't think the prices will be that high. Sale topper I'm sure a few will be bought or bid up enough to get to 40k.
-
I am hoping you are correct. Supply is up, slots no closer, covid losses and a lack of confirmed dates would make a logical person say they should be lower. I got shut out last year so fingers crossed.
-
Last year prices just plain stupid people paying up for them to be 3 yr olds and that will not pan out. Delong's came back and bought horses. Erv's guys the same. But there is nothing on the trot side other then Lou's L and you never know what Doc is keeping back as Steve S gets to pick from. FV I didn't see what they have to offer and if it's the same mares or if they updated and bought some younger ones. World of Rocknroll a big pass. Nothing to be excited about.
-
Good luck shopping tomorrow WW. Are u a trot guy or pacer?
-
Thanks! I buy both gaits but generally stick to pacers in Illinois. They tend to be able to race against other states after their 3 year old campaign.
-
tuff to invest in ill racing when owners are left in dark

After seeing the results,,,,,If Brink and Anthony weren't buying the sale would have had a huge issue
-
Mike Brink more then not is the buyer for his owners and they pay for the trotters. Have to buy them before the racing dates and before they know where they may race next summer. They have money to spend.

Dates are already set, what’s there to see?
Illinois breds sold pretty good, good luck to
Them all.
-
Really? Dates have been requested but they are not rewarded until Sept 16 IRB meeting. U may hold your breathe to see want Arlington really does with those supposed dates for 2021.

Your right, the end of the world is coming tmbz1
There won’t be any racing until 2099 again

Maybe it is do you have some set info on China releasing another virus?

What do you see as the threat with Arlington? I don't see them having enough horses to displace harness at Hawthorne.
-
This would be my take if Arlington gets the dates requested which they have a 2021 contract with the horsemen in place. That CDI gets a offer on the land or decides to pull out of the dates that Carey's have a decision to keep thoroughbreds from leaving the state after the spring dates are raced then switch to harness. That the Carey family has run 110 years of thoroughbreds that if the summer meet gets cancelled what happens with the horses? They need to race which means leaving Il and heading to another state which then fears horses don't come back for racing in the fall. Horsemen not making anything with the already small purses are paying twice moving horses around...not a expense they want to add in. There will be plenty of pressure on the Careys by the horsemen to race that summer meet as thoroughbreds not harness. I know Carey's are still working with and on a new track for harness but this coming summer could have a wrench thrown in with CDI. Remember CDI is a stock price with share holders and that's the only people they feel they need to cater to and are now a casino player then racetrack operators. Along with them owning 60% of Rivers casino they have made it public having no interest in competing against the casino with the racetrack and adding slots and gaming. While they are also wanting to own another casino in IL with Waukegan. That would be my take WW on a scenario that could play out. I'm not sure if CDI is actively shopping a prime 300 acres in Arlington especially with these low interest rates that could get a housing project and or low 0 rates for someone borrowing or leveraging next to nothing to build.
-
A friend and I were talking about CDI buying Arlington that it has been 20 years already. At the time the stock on average was worth about 8 dollars and RLD received over 3mln shares of stock, two board seats, and over 25% of CDI stock holder by far the largest single holder. In 2015 RLD sold some 900k shares back at a price of 44-45 and CDI bought those shares back. RLD still holds a 1.0mln or so shares at 173 dollars today. So 20 years ago those 300 plus acres are valued at what in 2020? Then they buy back at least a 1/3 shares back at 45 and now worth 173 been a great deal for both. CDI gets to sell off a prime property and not deal with horse racing.
-
Horse first let’s kill your theory once and for all here
$300 million prime real estate sold well below market value
$50 million for cleanup well below the actual cost
600 $1 million dollar homes built in this economy good luck
At let’s say 300k build out for 1/2 acre homes
Total cost to build out for developer $530 million over let’s say 5 years
to make maybe $70 million at best
Or build a big mall just 5 miles from woodfield mall?

Cigar what you said in that incoherent ramble just made anyone dumber for reading it. Listen and if I could draw it in crayon for you CDI paid 24mln appox for the property 20 years ago. Three million shares pick a price between 7 and 8 a share that year. Lets say for shits and giggles 26mln. RLD sells 900,000 shares back at 45 dollars and CDI bought them back didn't go to the public. Shares today worth 173.00. That five year windfall of 900k shares at 128 profit is 115mln. They may have bought back the other 1.1mln shares as well? Do you think CDI gives a shit if they sell it for 300mln, 200mln, or 150mln? It's free cash dumbass and free cash to buy a casino license and NOT have to worry about horse racing. There may be a 2021 contract in place with horsemen but Cigar what happens after if they are so lucky to race next year? And dumbass if rates are zero over the next decade and someone sitting on that much money to burn will earn 13.5% or 2.7% a year over that five year 70mln profit you came up with which is better then any bond or CD.
-
It doesn’t matter what they paid for it back when
It’s current value that counts for stock holders that’s a fact jack
Current value of property is in the 300 plus million range, so NO they won’t be selling it at a huge discount because grandpa bought it cheap.
I know you hate Illinois racing and all but you are clearly WRONG!
Plus Arlington heights has to approve any redevelopment of property good luck! There won’t ever be a mall there.
-
I don't hate IL racing there is lack of quality mares and trotting sires so why bother? The trainers I would give a quality trotter to have left and drivers are few and far between. What's left in IL good for them. Once slots ever come they will bring satellite stables, trainers may come back, may be some owners, and the ones that stuck it out will be the ones suffering to get a check.
By the way who is valuing that property at 100k a acre is that in the public? Don't worry CDI will do what they think is right and they know racing at Arlington is not the future. That's not me hating IL racing just the...truth!
-
That’s the value of that area, CDI is pushing for a reduced tax rate on a casino at the track more than anything. Arlington heights already threatened them with a landmark position on the track in the past. So it’s politics back and forth. CDI is probably not getting a Waukegan position unless something happens. So selling the property at a HUGE discount won’t make any shareholders happy. That track will either get a slim down operations or get sold as a track with a limited gaming agreement for X amount of years going forward.

Any money will be welcomed if Arlington has no casino or racing
Not a hard concept to grasp
And yes $70M PROFIT would be welcomed even for a $500M investment as u say
Trust me I know numpers
-
The stock is less then 7 dollars off it's all time high closing today at 176.43. Has a mkt cap of 6.96 bln dollars. Find me inside were it shows the valuation CDI has for the Arlington property? Whether CDI is in the running for a Waukegan or rumored as one in the mix for a Chicago mega casino they are a player with the footprint for a casino operator and are vetted for a license having holding one. Your blaming me for hating in IL racing when it's actually the racetrack owner itself hating on IL racing...lol.
-
I just hope my owners purchase on a nice bred Colt trotter can take down the 5 that Brink bought. Hard to play the game against his money.
-

I wish them well. I bought 1 filly pacer, 1 colt trotter and 1 colt pacer. I looked at the result and every big money owner bought at least a 30k yearling in each of their divisions.
-
This is why Illinois needs the slots, no offense to the guy who I don’t even know but when someone says hard to beat Brink’s money it’s kinda sad. Before guys like Erv, Dirk Simpson, Roger Welch and Butenschoen left I remember Mike Brink hoping to win a feature at a county fair. And I don’t think he had more than one or two horses race on Super Night during that time.
-
Mike has in the past few years just to the fact there aren't many trotters bred in the state. Now for what his clients spend it's not good. Had a nice trotter King Mufasa but I suppose that was 6 years ago he won most the state races and SN at 3. Dirk was still her as well. Hard to make money back in IL with limited staking schedule and smaller SN purses.

My bad, I should've worded that better...what I meant was, it's hard for a small stable to compete with guys who have owners spending 60-100k on illinois breds.
-
I was referring to Casualfan post about Mike and his clients. But your right small stables are always up against the big boys. Wouldn't be any different when slots come and if IL can build a program. The small stables will have a awful tough go at that point.

On a different front commissioner McCauley resigns for personal reasons from the IRB. Left with 5 members.
