Title: Which harness track has evolved the least / most ?
Post by: Pete Butler on June 21, 2020, 11:36:48 AM
As I watch these simulcasts from home it seems Hawthorne is stuck in a bygone era and the Meadowlands is at least trying to keep up with 2020 standards of providing a fresh product.

Your opinions? Who's stagnant? Who's most ready to provide folks with a good racing experience?

Look at the places, Meadowlands at least has a newer nicer building and venues to eat. Mots RACINOs are NOT bulit for Harness racing they are casinos with a race track, plain and simple. They spend the least possible to promote, never looking to work with areas they are in to promote RACING product. Do you really think there is a casino that actually wants racing. If they shut racing down people will bet on cockroaches aor anything else. At least when tracks were owned by individuals we had a fighting chance, now Harrahs, MGM, Penn gaming etc we are fighting with both arms behind our backs.

The least is a lock. That would be Monticello Raceway. The Action Attraction. You couldn't even get back in the building when you went outside to watch the race. That was of course when they were racing. You had to walk about a 1/2 mile around the building because they kept the doors locked.  11.wp 11.wp

A lot of people bitch about Gural but he does at least try to make the product attractive. Clean facilities and for the most part, at least in my experience, he treats horsemen well.

Fair, however some leave feeling like the place is temporary in some capacity.  It could be for the better, but they got work to do.

Does regressing from a racie track to a garbage dump, rat infested manure pile count?  Scarborough Downs wins hands down.  I think Miami Valley is trying to keep up with the times.

The one that has regressed the most is Raceway Park.... It's now a parking lot

MV and Dayton are up to speed.  Decent facilites for fans and top notch paddocks.  Sad that these OHIO horsement have to spend 4 mos @ rundown Scioto.

The scroll at the bottom of the live feed that gives the changes calls the drivers riders. They don't know what type of races they are running.

For Richer For Poorer
For Bettor For Worse
Till Death Do Us Part

I think stakes quality horse owners can relate to that statement as they are all married to him.  At least the guy tries to bring us some quality racing.  Long Live Jeff G.

Even the Tioga card today was good

The fact Hawthorne is mentioned with new meadowlands is a joke Hawthorne when racing was racing was a C harness track at most i mean it was better then maywood qaud city and Balmoral,,,, Balmoral and maywood evolved more when sportsmans closed but Hawthorne was never a gem so that really shouldbt be a debate!!!!!!

You won't hear me talk shit about Hawthorne. The Carey family cares about horsemen and single-handedly kept racing alive in Illinois. Imo there isn't much they can do with the place. It is what it is

Pocono and Yonkers are just awful and have no excuse

Mohawk is great.
For bettors that still like to go to the track, they have newer seating and private pods.
Finally got rid of the lineups looking for a free bbq tongs.

New barn for the horses as well.

Hoosier has easily surpassed Scioto Downs as the gem of the midwest.  Harrah's has a formula to entice and retain patrons.  Hotels surrounding the racino have shuttle service every 10 minutes.  Clean, nice and well run.  Red Mile isn't too far behind Hoosier.  It too is very good.  now, the racing at red mile is subpar; but, the overall gaming product venue is pretty good.  Of the Ohio places  -  Miami Valley and Dayton are both pretty nice.
