Only because I have too much time on my hands and not enough money for mischief...I will Hijack/Piggyback 7 Trains hockey thread...Here is the challenge...in 1966, there were only 6 NHL teams in play..Name their coaches, their team captains, and the position they played...nickname s, if applicable, will show you are a true hockey maven...try to do this WITHOUT benefit of Google....M.R.
-
GREAT question !! I'll never get them all but will try.. No Google, that wouldn't be fun..
BOSTON BRUINS #9 Johnny Bucyk
New York Rangers #3 Harry Howell
Chicago Black Hawks #3 Pierre Pilote
Detroit Red Wings #9 Gordie Howe
Toronto Maple Leafs # 10 George Armstrong
Montreal Canadiens # 4 Jean Beliveau
-
On my list of Captains, George Armstrong and Johnny Bucyk had the same nickname with fellow players... What was it ?

Not bad... the only incorrect answer was Howe...Detroit's Captain was #10...Alex Delvecchio...his nickname....Fats. .....Now go after the coaches...and use their REAL names....

FYI...3 of the captains were defensemen....2 were pure centyers (Beliveau & Delvecchio)..and Bucyk Played mainly at Center but occasionally was put on a wing with the Hodge line on occasion...
-
Thanks for the updates.. I saw Bucyk play in the old Garden He also played wing with Sanderson and Stanfield some.. Also Johnny "Pie" McKenzie #19 Stanfield 17 Hodge 8 Espo 7 Westfall 18 wayne Careleton 11 Sanderson and Westfall played together on the 3rd line a lot.
Congrats you got the Chief correct !
-
COACHES: Wow, I''ll try.
Hector "Toe" Blake Habs
George "Punch" Imlach Leafs
Tommy Ivan Hawks
Tom Johnson Bruins
Emile "The Cat" Francis Rangers
Sid Abel Wings ?
Those are my selections
-
DING!! DING!!! DING!!!! DING!!!! We have a winnahhhh!!!!! You could have also plugged in Milt Schmidt for the Bruins and been correct.....I thought the nickname for Emile Francis might have escaped you....I Was Wrong.....
-
Annnnndddd....Bil ly Reay also put in some time behind the Hawks' bench....Fact.... the Hawks and the Red Wings shared some common ownership interests in the 1960's and 1970's....The hawks were owned by the Wirtz family, who also owned the LBJ winner Governor Skipper, and the Red Wings' brain trust was headed by Bruce Norris, who was married to Marguerite Wirtz....Tommy Ivan spent time in the front offices of both the Hawks and the Red Wings....
-
Challenge #2....Name all of the 2-goalie tandems for the 1966 Original 6 NHL Teams....And, if you can identify which goalies played the next year for an expansion team...you will get a case of ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!
-
Sounds like an offer my ex wife gave me !!!!!!!!!!
Got a Drs Appt.. Back later !
-
Great info !!! Thanks. This is fun.. I believe Emile Francis was a goalie way back and got the nickname because he was quick as a cat in the nets !
-
Doubt I can get the two goalies but Ill try and get some:
Bruins Don Simmons But in the mid to late 60 s Eddie Johnson Gerry Cheevers also Jack Norris
Rangers: Eddie Giacomin-Gilles Villemure (who was into harness racing too)
Black Hawks: Glen Hall Dennis Dejordy ?
Montreal:Charlie Hodge--Jacque Plante
Detroit : Terry Sawchuk--
Toronto: Johnny Bower --
That's the best I can do.. May think of the others later....
-
Not bad guesses for teams that played 50 years ago....Here is the info...Rangers... Giacomin, Villemure, and Maniago...Bruins. ..Ed Johnston, BERNIE PARENT, and Gerry Cheevers....Red Wings....Crozier, Bassen...Leafs... Bower, Sawchuk, and Gamble.....Black Hawks....Hall , De Jordy....Canadien s...Charlie Hodge, Lorne "Gump" Worsley....
-
Da Gumper !!! Forgot him.. I think he played for the Rangers too... Bassen,,, Right.. Bruce Gamble I tried and tried but couldn't come up with him altho I knew of him...Good stuff.. Maniago went with expansion to the Stars and Hodge to the Seals
-
When Charlie was left unprotected by the Habs, he wound up being selected by the Oakland Seals...He became my neighbor for 7 years till i moved back to Canoga Park...Charlie and DeeDee were great people, and he gave me his game jerseys from the Canadiens as a going-away gift. Looking back, i should have asked him for a Seals jersey, because they are worth a hellof a lot of money now...Charlie passed away earlier this year back in Quebec, he was one of many solid netminders for the Habs...
-
Interesting story.. Still have his Montreal jerseys or sweaters as they called them ?
-
Yes i do...my best friend's son will get an awesome gift upon my demise...Also...e ven though they are regarded as one of the classisest franchises in the NHL, the owners at the time(NOT the Molson's)...tried to screw Charlie out of his players' pension, saying it was the responsibility of the Seals' organzation, which was defunct...Charlie had to threaten them with a Civil suit in Provincial Court to get them to pay out on the pension...thats what happens when bean-counters and businessmen own sports franchises, rather than sportsmen...
-
Sad story...Charlie seemed like a class guy.. I got to know some players and refs in time.. All that I got to know were fun to hang out with.....They would share stories and be regular guys.. I'm sure there a holes out there.. Got to hear a behind the scenes story or 2.. this was not the 60's bunch, but 70's 80' early 90's..
-
I was told by a friend who lived in Detroit during that time that most of the Red Wings were very accessible...they would do PA.s at Department Stores, Car Dealers and the like...even the old-timers like Lindsay and Pavelich would do them too...A different breed of player...
-
They played for the love of the game as much or more than the $$.. Better than working on the farm in Saskatchewan !
-
Bringing up referees...rememb er Vern Buffey and Frank Udvari??? I thought they were the worst refs in the NHL...Vern had the Trump 'do long before it became stylish....
-
I do.. Never met them while they were on ice , as was just a kid.. (Met Udvari when he was a Supervisor)..First one I met was a linesman Neil Armstrong as I worked at a Country Club and he had a day off between games.. (Tues-Thurs or Thurs Sat) and I got him on the golf course. When he returned , he had a different crew working with him.. In a matter of a few months I knew most of the staff that worked the Eastern half of the US games. In a year I knew them all.. Free tickets out of town, a puck collection,(game used), of over 500.. One even stayed over at my house. Got a couple game worn jerseys too...
