I tried the hay bags and it is basically useless. As the horses pull the hay out of the bag, most of the hay falls on the ground anyway. It does give the horse something to do. But a drawback of the hay bags at the front of the stall is that when the horse pulls all of the hay out of the bag, they lean down to get the extra that fell out of the bag. And many get their heads under the gate or the webbing, scare themselves and pop the gate off of its screw eyes and voila-they are running around the barn area. Have to use bungee cords to hold the gate down. ;D

runners are more nervous and moody by nature. hay bags are like pacifiers and keep them occupied and engaged instead of sulking in the back of the stall.

they are like prima donnas compared to Standardbreds.

WHY ARE HARNESS HORSES MOSTLY THROWN SLEEVES OF HAY IN STALLS

AND TBRED HORSES

THEIR HAY IS IN A LARGE BALL HUNG OUTSIDE THERE STALL GATE MOST OF THE TIME,,

ITS BEEN BUGGIN ME FOR YRS

The hay in the bag is all show and no go.  It's unnatural for a horse to grace from above but in the old days the runners and the harness did this to make the grooms work harder for the $7 a week.  There is no deeper meaning to this.  It's a psychological thing too when you photos show that the horse has "food"  Hay bags are not natural and they are dangerous. It's just a show.   END OF STORY!
