You can make a case for a lot of those mentioned.  Somebeach, Sebastian K, Foiled, Sweet Lou. How about Always B Miki?  Broke bones in his hind legs two times (one time when favored in the three year old Crown) and the other leg not as bad with Takter later.   Still set the fastest mile ever at the time after.

Lots of good ones over the past 25 years but Beach is the best.

Second the motion.

2yo: Peter Haughton, Breeders Crown, Dan Patch 2yo Colt trotter (8 for 9)

3yo: Hambo, Canadian Trotting Classic, American National, World Trotting Derby, Kentucky Futurity, Breeders' Crown (12 for 12) Hambo in 1:50.1 in 2009!!! $2,456,000 as a 3 yo and Dan Patch Horse of the Year

Career totals: 20 for 21, $3,273,000  (after his first race, where he finished 2nd, he won his last 20 in a row...for a TROTTER!!)

Also, like SBSW on the pacing side, he has proven to be a top sire.

Muscle Hill

Was coming here to say this. If you categorize "best" as inclusive of breeding stats, it's him and SBSW, in my opinion.

Foiled Again had longevity but he lost ALOT of races. He was only the top ffa for basically one season. His Meadowlands  record is pretty poor in totality

Trotter: Muscle Hill
Pacer: Somebeachsomewher e
Mare Pacer: Test of Faith
Mare Trotter: Manchego

Best? I don't know how people quantify "best" with some horses racing and doing what they did at 2, 3, 4, or older. Add gait to the discussion. For me, the greatest horse I have seen in the last 25 years is Somebeachsomewher e. He had more natural talent and ability than any horse I've seen in the last 25 years. On the trotting side, Muscle Hill, and I feel compelled to give a vote to Varenne, both for the same reasons.

Test of Faith's ovaries would have fallen out if she had to face Shartin N and Manchego's career was not as good as Atlanta's.

If Confederate races the TVG and crushed the older horses, he puts himself into consideration. That hasn’t been done since what? The early 80s? Bret Hanover in the 60s?. His resume is on par with pretty much anything since the beach for 2-3 year old years, and if he goes gout and jerks bythemissals bridle… you gotta at least put him in the conversation.

I also think if bythemissal can stay healthy he’s gonna make a TON of money. 4-5 million before it’s all said and done.
