To each his own. But the smartest gamblers want their money in when there is +EV or damn close to it... which is the carryover pool. And whatever makes the C/O higher, I'm all for. I know New Jersey pays 4/5, at least Monmouth.
Meadowlands and Monmouth pay 4/5 on every pick 5 no matter if 5/5 is hit or not. Gulfstream does that same.
Saratoga Harness is the same way....so I found out the hard way last year. I played a ticket close to 100.00 and landed a 5-1,10-1 and 40-1 in the sequence only to fall short and hit 4/5. Of course nobody hit the pick 5 pool of about 6k. I surely thought I would have gotten a healthy consolation for picking 4/5 but nada, nothing, zilch. From that point on I have never placed a bet with Saratoga Harness. Never again. My fault for not knowing the rules of the bet though.
And what did four out of five pay? Obviously the carryover wasnt hurt by them paying before out of five.
