In a troubling turn of events, negotiations over a revision to the existing contract between Vernon Downs management and the Harness Horse Association of Central New York (HHACNY) have reached an impasse, leaving the scheduled June 10 opening in jeopardy.
Despite considerable losses incurred each year from continuing to operate a race meet at Vernon, track owner Jeff Gural was prepared to start the live meet well in advance of opening the Vernon casino and personally fund any shortfall to get them started racing.

Vernon blows because the horsemen are literally the worst in the sport. There isn't one good trainer or driver. Vernon is a much better track then anything else in the state, it actually might be the best track in north america, but with shitty horses, shitty trainers, and shitty drivers...you end up with shitty product.
Gural shouldn’t be concerned with this delay, if the vernon horsemen do not want his loan terms then both parties fall back to the original contractual agreement and race when it is permitted.
Or as my best buddy just said, Gural should close the casino and track and see how the horsemen like that.
Joe Faraldo is a fucking dimwit scum sucking fucking maggot, that is a fact. But how he is being blamed here is absurd. The horsemen don’t have enough money to start the meet, bottom line. Gural tried to strong arm them into a loan situation with terms, the horsemen refused. Just race when the contract permits or close the fucking shithole down.
Don’t forget Gural plays favorites, he lets some cheaters race and bans cheaters who dont kiss his ass. He is not a good guy, he is a con man, through and through. He loves to move goalposts, like this loan to start racing, As long as he benefits longterm.
And to be clear, every track loses money to conduct racing. Every single track.
The casinos overcome those loses and make the owners and horsemen profitable. No track makes money. That argument by Gural is so fucking overused now it pisses me off.
Jeff-stop being a fucking bitch, they don't want your deal then end discussion and open when the casino starts making cash. Heads up Turning Stone opens June 10 and your loyal customers will be there spinning machines and may never come back anyways. There is a good chance vernon casino is bankrupted anyways.

Gural was handed the keys to a legal sports book in the best market in the country. (Thanks to the efforts of others) Also, he receives funding from the state of nj for purses by way of a subsidy from the casinos.
Neither of those things have stopped him from whining every week about losing money with Vernon. Now thats whats remarkable.

Time for a little dose of truth and reality regarding Vernon Downs.
The headline is false and inflammatory. There is no contract impasse. We have a contract in place until 12/31/2021. Management has asked the HHACNY to make changes to the existing contract to help out with the current pandemic situation. We agreed.
Management asked us to cut the agreed upon 70 race days to 50. We agreed.
Management asked us to cut purses 20% for the first 15 race days. We agreed.
Management asked us to cut purses again after 30 days if there isn’t sufficient funds to sustain $40,000 per day to race. We agreed.
With the agreed upon contract changes, we will race for $1,880,000 in 2020. Management is allowed to use up to 10% of the horseman’s purse account for stake races. So with these numbers, we will give management $188,000 of OUR purse money to fund The Zwieg and The Empire Breeders Stakes. Mr Gural says this isn’t good enough and he wants $250,000 for his stakes program.
As in the past, when he isn’t satisfied he punishes the horsemen and threatens their livelihood with closure.
We will make one final compromise. If we give Mr Gural an additional $62,000 of OUR purse money for 2020, (which will raise his percentage to 13.2%) I propose he lowers his stakes percentage in 2021 to 7.5% of OUR money to fund stakes races.
The ball is in your court Mr. Gural. We have been more than accommodating. Do the right thing....open the track. These horsemen need to race, they have been unemployed for months...open the track. The local economy needs racing...open the track.
Please share and feel free to message me with any questions.
Joe D’Agostino,
Vice President
HHACNY

If I were an owner, I'd have known for the past two decades that this day was coming.
If I were an owner, I'd have made decisions knowing this day was coming.
Please stop crying about no longer getting your unearned welfare check.
It's fucking embarrassing.

Thank you for clarifying the issue.
These times often require both parties to arrive at an "unhappy medium" for things to survive and go forward. Jeff Gural, for any number of reasons (some deserved and some not so much) oftens gets a bad rap on this board-although i didnt see anyone help beating a path to save the Meadowlands.
In this case, however, it appears that you have done more than your share to compromise and make racing happen.
Its his turn to step up now.
lets get back to racing!

Vernon, NY – The Harness Horse Association of Central New York, the Gaming Commission-recognized representative horsemen’s association at Vernon Downs Racetrack, is pleased to announce that it has secured a two-year extension of its horsemen’s agreement with Vernon Down’s management and agreed to a waiver of the 10 percent cap on the two important 2020 Vernon stakes in this difficult year. A formal agreement is to be executed.
Vernon Downs and the Harness Horsemen’s Association of Central NY reached an agreement on a contract extension. Vernon Downs Photo.
As part of the negotiation to achieve this agreement favorable to both parties, which ensures that the horsemen will receive all of the beneficial terms and conditions guaranteed under the present contract through the two-year extension of the base agreement (now extended through December 31, 2023), the horsemen have agreed to a one-time waiver of the 10 percent cap on stakes allocation from the purse account, permitting the full funding of the 2020 renewals of The Zweig and Empire Breeders Classic.
“As we both have worked towards the restoration of harness racing to central New York in the aftermath of the most destructive period of the viral pandemic, it was important to make sure that our owners, trainers and drivers could rely on long-term continued operations of the raceway,” said HHACNY President Rick Papa. “The financial devastation that has impacted our members cannot be recouped by us or management without some give and take on each side. That’s why it was so important to obtain this extension from management. While the horsemen were concerned about the uncertainty of whether or when the current season would commence, the HHACNY membership has again reached a successful resolution of this issue working with management to obtain a clear and concise deal removing any ambiguity.”
“I am glad we were able to resolve this and credit Rick for coming up with a compromise that makes sense for all concerned,” added Vernon Downs President Jeff Gural. “As a horseman, I recognize how important it is to get racing up and running and come up with a plan for the sire stakes as well.”
Vernon Downs is scheduled to resume racing on June 10.
