Title: Professional Harness Handicappers
Post by: HornbyDuke on September 30, 2019, 02:57:56 PM
I've been a handicapper for some time. IMHO maybe slightly better than the average capper but not profitable and not nearly as good as many on here. For awhile I've noticed almost universal condemnation of public handicappers. I find this a little unfair. Are there any public handicappers that folks like. I like  two of the guys up in Canada that handicap Mohawk - barnsdale and Hamilton. And also like giwinner (has to be a made up name) and Tiny Little at the big m. Know these may not be popular but I've learned from them. Anybody have any favorites.

Also, what does it say about handicapping in general that even these guys that do this for a living usually have a negative roi. Given this, how could anyone profit from horse racing wagering?

NO MATTER HOW U SLICE IT, 35% OR SO IS BEST WIN% U GET ON FAVS.  NOT A SURE THING FOR ME

No question some insightful handicappers on here. I've picked up even more though listening to the horsemen. Lot of valuable info there - just have to try to weed out BS from valuable info.

My guess is most successful:
Limit bets to a few on a card
Have horseman background and not just handicapping skill/angles.
Know reliable sources when inside info is forthcoming.
Are in a good rebate platform.
Crush the play when confident

35% was 2002.

The major 1/2's ... Yonkers, Northfield ... it's 47% or 48%.  tmbz1

So far this year I’ve stuck to 99% multileg wagers

Much better value imo
One takeout for 5 races

Once and a blue moon I’ll take a shot to win or win and place depending on the venue

Some smaller pools like Yonkers and pocono it’s not worth betting place along with win

I cant speak for most on here as i know a few who bet horses quite a bit. Personally i bet 95% of my harness play on win only. Playing exactor/tri especially regularly is a death trap. Generally $100-$200 win bets when playing.

The big gambling to play is on football, vollege and nfl. You gotta follow trends, weather & you get best odds & betting bonuses as well.

Good luck in your betting ventures. tmbz1

"The current percentage of winning favorites at the Meadowlands is 38. Of harness tracks currently racing, the median percentage is 46."

I was at Hazel Park over 25 years ago. A guy in the club house sitting next to me struck up a conversation with me asking how i was betting. At the time i was betting 3 horse exacta boxes for a dollar. he told me to bet to win. take what ever money i have to bet and bet to win on several races. He said to look at the favorite and see who could beat him. if no one can beat him bet him. If someone can beat him bet them...Dont bet gimmicks just bet to win. Is this a sound strategy? I dont do it but should I try?
