purse money should go to overnights
« on: April 21, 2019, 12:26:54 AM »
i commented before that it was  a smart move by the big m cancelling the 3 diamonds and other stakes and giving the money to overnights and numerous people came on saying no, people love stakes racing
WRONG...
just cause you come by a hotdog on 3 diamonds day that wont save the sport
competative day after day racing will...
tonight the matchmaker final had a 37k exacta pool and the levy 40k
often stakes racing are the WORST betting races

get drivers trying in every race and we can save the sport...
not by having 1 million dollar race for 2 year old trotters..

What comes first , the chicken or the egg? I can see your point, Purple. But, there is another perspective and that is of a breeder or yearing buyer. It goes without saying that every overnight horse was a 2 and 3 year old at some time. To breed the best to the best you need tons of money. In order to get a return on that investment, the buyer of yearlings needs racing opertunities that give hope to a profit, like multi- hundred thousand dollar races.
Without this, you can forget about overnight racing anyway.

Some of the slot purses should go to buoy up some of the gimmick wagers, pick 5 and that sort of stuff.Seed $ to get people chasing the big pot.

Giving all this money to the two and three-year-old stakes races just keeps their Yearling prices artificially high-I say let the market Forces determine their value and not races where the purse is greater than the amount wagered

Then again people pay a lot of money for diamonds and art and they don't race for Big Money sometimes people just like to have nice things and it doesn't matter about what they get back

on matinee races - you'll see a small crowd and those folks are mostly savvy gambling folks.  roll to friday and saturday night and it's an audience for entertainmnet.  thye do not care what the claimer is, what the condition is - etc.  they are unskilled as players - but, will sure as heck slap down a bet on a handsome horse, a good name or for who knows why.  they could care less if its an open or big purse race.  no matter how much the announcers blab about what terrific horses are in the race - the average, occasional track attendee does not give one nor two hoots.  The fact is, the gimmick wagers are extra fun for the people out for some fun  -  the tracks would be well served by competing w/ entertainment options and focus on the fun factor.  Heck the racinos would benefit at the bar, food service and slots if they can entice more people to their houses.

this sports business model is for thoroughbreds w/ stellar pedigree and high dollar breeding.  the standardbred audience is more county fair, low wagering people that come round to watch the horses circle the track.  the larger stdbred breeders would be well served to compete their best bred and looking horses in one or two bigtime entry staked affairs and sell off the poor conformation, ugly colts and fillies to launch overnight careers.  the breeders w/ big facilities could easily stock the overnight racing needs by going quantity over quality and every once in a blue moon finding a hi end prospect.
