Jeff tells the horseman you can use the track just cover all the costs including the purses for one night a week .

What's wrong with that?

He is just trying to help the horseman out. For the Meadowlands 2 nights they had 777 horses entered for 260 open slots.

East Rutherford, NJ - The number of horses entered this morning for the weekend harness racing draw at The Meadowlands was a staggering 777.

With the purse account under duress from compromised revenue streams this year, the number of races will remain at 13 for each day which leaves more than 500 horses with no place to race. There is simply not the revenue in The Meadowlands purse account to fund the addition of more racing days.

Recognizing that the hardship continues to increase for owners and trainers as more time passes time passes without an answer on how to get horses raced and when the various sires stakes will get underway, Jeff Gural has a thought to try and give more horses a chance to race.

Pending NJ Commission and state approval, The Meadowlands would consider leasing the track to horsemen's associations to add a race card beginning next week for a few weeks as necessary until more tracks open, provided they could fund the purses from their purse or sires stake account.

Helping the horeman by allowing them to pay him?

Yeah, that's a wonderful gesture.

Even by his own standards, he's outdone himself this time

What happened to the state subsidy he received last year of 6 million? Plus all the revenue from the fan duel Sportsbook . He rents the track for one dollar a year . He can’t put up one extra night of racing himself ? Please so I have to put up a few hundred to race as does everyone else and we have at it . Plus we pay for the lights , vet, ambulance, starter ect . But we don’t share In the handle ? Sounds like a great deal for Gural . He’s only worth 2.6 billion and needs to do this ?

It’s time for PA to get with it and start racing. Finally got the meadows.
Let’s go PD and Chester. Wolf is killing PA with his different county phases.

This might be in regards to the problems of rescheduling stake races. NY already has the stake money and with Buffalo not wanting stakes, Monticello in dire straights according to some and no one knowing when Yonkers might race, it would be a good option. The handle would cover some if not all of the expenses.

Why do people rip Gural. He isn't obligated to pay for purses out of own pocket but he does. He is a business man just like everyone else. McDonalds doesn't give away burgers. Walmart doesn't let you leave the store without paying and yet there are a bunch of whiners who criticize him because he doesn't fund harness racing and the dysfunction it possesses.

NOT RIPPING ON GURAL AT ALL, I DONT THINK GURAL OR SLOTS OR SUBSIDIES SHOULD PAY THE HORSEMEN ONE PENNY.   IF AFTER PAYING ALL BILLS THERE IS 1700 LEFT LET THEM RACE 10 RACES FOR 170 WINNER TAKES ALL.

Exactly.  Whether you like him or not the question is would the sport be better with him or without him?  Obviously, it needs him.  He is a businessman but he also supports the racing and it's obvious he's not making any money doing it right now.  He was able to get the Meadowlands, Tioga and Vernon reopened while Yonkers, Pocono, Monticello and Saratoga remain dark.  If he wanted those 3 tracks closed they easily would be closed and there would be no harness racing in NY or NJ except Buffalo.  Look at the disaster called baseball if you want other possible all in outcomes with no compromise.  Enough said.
