US Supreme Court rules for New Jersey in state's fight to legalize sports betting
-
Yep 7-2 in favor. Just not a NJ thing. It's now a state by state to legalize their own rule for sports betting. IL another poor state via the way of politicians spending more then they have and a pension system that's only 37% funded will likely look to legalize sports wagering in the next few years.

Supreme Court makes sports betting a possibility nationwide

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Supreme Court has struck down a federal law that bars gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states, giving states the go-ahead to legalize betting on sports.
The Supreme Court on Monday struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. The 1992 law barred state-authorized sports gambling with some exceptions. It made Nevada the only state where a person could wager on the results of a single game.
One research firm estimated before the ruling that if the Supreme Court were to strike down the law, 32 states would likely offer sports betting within five years.
The court's decision came in a case from New Jersey, which has fought for years to legalize gambling on sports at casinos and racetracks in the state.

WORD GETS AROUND FAST
Penn National Gaming, which operates Hollywood Casino in Columbus and Toledo, is interested.
“Sports betting could be another amenity at our Hollywood properties and help generate additional visitation to the properties, as well as drive incremental tax revenue for Ohio,” it said in a statement. “We welcome the opportunity to discuss legal sports betting with legislators in Columbus and other key stakeholders.”

...its a huge question and i hope that one day soon ontario and canada wakeup...i know WOODBINE ENTERTAINMENT is lobbying hard for single event wagering. Stay tuned up here and the best ofbluck to our american fruends...what an opportunity!!!!!!!

Jeff Gural disagrees. This was his quite from December
At the Meadowlands we’ve overpaid purses by $4 million right now and (paying more into the purse account) is not an issue for me,” he said. “The horsemen are lucky I fund the losses that keep the Meadowlands open so I doubt if this would have a dramatic effect on purses. All it’s going to do is help pay the bills. Obviously, if I am wrong and there is some bonanza from sports betting that I am not anticipating I would look into sharing it with the horsemen. But all I’ve ever head from people is you don’t make a lot of money from sports betting.”

Currently, what percentage of people in attendance at a live sporting event have action on that game? I'm guessing between 10-20%.
Imagine if that increases to 30-50% and every questionable coaching or umpire decision, pulling starters late in game, weak efforts by players, etc....there going to be riots!
-
Obviously this is better for a track to have live betting for sporting games because it brings other revenue into the track. If it's electronic then it's just like ADW. Also if your there wagering on sports for a 3 hour game with your money tied up, your not betting the ponies. Reports say the Vegas sport book is just 2% of its gaming handle. It helps other things related with having a casino and patrons spending money. Slots are where the money is made. I'm on the fence a little that this is a big revenue hit for race tracks and there purse account. IN maybe be in a better spot with Caesars owning the track and getting sports betting. Same with Penn owning the Meadows or Harrahs with Chester. Churchill owns a few tracks. I think in short term go out and purchase some stock in those names. Also Vegas this year had record profits on the sport wagering end while horse racing revenues declined.

P.S. The person to thank for this freedom bestowed upon sports bettors is state D- Sen. Ray Lesniak, of the 20th voting district of N.J.
This was his bill from day 1. Even once Chris Christie left the wagon, Ray always stood on the running boards and got it to the Supreme court and ultimately the finish line.

Have to love the on going commitment by the ones who write these horse racing articles. That the second to last paragraph referring to NJ horse tracks and agribusiness as being a 4 bln dollar industry. Some day someone will have to call them out for this information and provide actually details. Along with the usual 30,000 people in various states that are involved in horse racing. For some reason that's usually the magic number. O well whatever sells.

From what I've heard, there is a possibility that the state-run sports betting apps that Illinois will implement might include horse racing. I think this would be HUGE for harness racing.
Yes, I know the tracks see very little of the money wagered on sites like twinspires, xpressbet, etc., and it would likely be the same in this case. But right now, the sport needs EXPOSURE! I'm probably the youngest person on these boards at 21 years old. So many of my friends don't even know what harness racing is! I've introduced about 15 people to the sport by taking them to the track, and guess what? They had a blast and have gone back several times on their own!
If Hawthorne can find a way to get themselves on Illinois's sports betting app, they are automatically at the fingertips of 10+ million people! If just a mere 0.1% of people who use this app click on that "Horse Racing - Hawthorne Racecourse" option... BOOM, Hawthorne just reached out to 10,000+ new people.
If Illinois horsemen are only concerned with the short term impact of joining this app (a potential dip in handle), this may be the demise of Illinois harness racing. But if they advocate with full force to be apart of this new wave of sports betting, this could be the savior harness racing needs.

as a resident of Melrose park and Illinois I gotta tell you...Illinois is retarded. the democrats running things will tax the gamblers...again! and give tax breaks to the racetrack owners, casino operators, and legal book shops if any appear on their own.
the little guy will be crushed...example paying -125 instead of -110 on a Bears game. 2 teamers will pay 22.5/10 instead of 26/10. the books and tracks will skirt paying for the privilege of taking wagers as usual so they can spend their billions lobbying to keep the cash tiled their way.
lastly, there will be NO track susbidies like vlt's paying for purses aka yonkers. book shops will pay a business tax and not put much into advertising much less a 90% dead business like harness.
just might push harness over the cliff once and for all here.
do you know how I fell sickened every time I drive past Maywood and see it withering away there? a lifetime of memories gone. really sux

Mark Cuban went before the media and opined that his franchise eval doubled after the announcement on the repeal of PAPSA. Jerry Jones feels the same way. Any Adam Silver pipedream of a 1% Integrity fee is just that - a shakedown mixed with folly. If this ramp up of legalized wagering on sports is done correctly, the sports leagues stand to see more interests than ever. Some business experts believe daily interest in MLB games will really take off in the face of a 162 game grind to the postseason. Another potential boon.

It's going to be both. Draftkings has already signaled they're interested in offering sports wagering. It'll depend what the federal framework looks like then what each individual states decide beyond that framework.

Meadowlands chairman Jeff Gural will talk about what lies ahead for Garden State bettors Friday night (May 18) as the Big M prepares to take action on professional and college sports in the coming weeks.
On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court sided with New Jersey and ruled that sports betting is now legal across the country.
Gural will be interviewed by the Meadowlands’ television department’s primary host Dave Brower before the Friday night program gets underway and explain how sports betting will work and when players will be able to place their first wagers.
The interview will take place Friday evening at 6:45 p.m. and can be seen by anyone watching the live “Racing from the Meadowlands” pre-game show.

T BRED PEOPLE ARE ALWAYS A COUPLE OF STEPS AHEAD OF THEIR BUGGY BOY RED HEADED STEP CHILDREN
OCEANPORT – It could be an historic Memorial Day at the Jersey Shore.
The tentative date set for Monmouth Park to open the William Hill Sports Book and begin accepting the first wagers on individual sporting events outside Nevada is Monday, May 28, track officials said.
The announcement Tuesday came a day after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled favorably in New Jersey's bid to legalize sports betting in the state.
Drazin has said there is nothing stopping Monmouth Park from opening its sports book before the legislation is complete, nor has he been told by Gov. Phil Murphy or Senate president Steve Sweeney that they would stop the track
Monmouth Park and William Hill have spent around $2.5 million on the William Hill Sports Bar over the past four years, which will quickly be converted into the sports book. William Hill, which gets half the proceeds of sports betting at Monmouth Park, is contractually obligated to spend $5 million to build out the sports betting infrastructure in the coming years.
Fans will be able to bet on anything they would be able to wager on in Las Vegas, including the NBA Finals, set to begin on May 31.
-
.....get a sports betting parlor or anything. Or just a cut from it ? Does anything change?
-
Hopefully, simply because there are people that wager on the product and would do so more if it improved.
-
If Vegas profited 265mln on 4BLN handled or wagered on sports betting. Someone please tell me how this is going to be a windfall for horse racing? It will help track owners and does anyone know if Jersey, especially Monmouth Park has a split with the thoroughbred group yet? Don't get me wrong it will help the overnights but this is nowhere close to bringing back a breeding program or sires stake program for young horses. Sports betting will just drive more money wagered at tracks away. That will be a given.
-
There are so many dynamic and yet to be identified moving parts to this, it is way to early to tell anything about the actual benefits and who will be the benefactors.
-
I make my living racing horses but I do not see why any state or operator of a gaming establishment would want to or should share the proceeds with the horse industry. If they do great. The NBA commissioner that thinks he wants to work with states so they can get a cut must be the most asinine thing I ever heard. Billionaires think they should profit off of this. How about we try and help the less fortunate and maybe use some of this to help kids pay for college that cant afford it so they can get a job that pays well.
-
These billionaire team owners are too greedy, fuck them and their 1%
So let's say for arguments sake they get their 1% integrity tax, will the fuckers lower ticket prices?

Is it possible the state pays Jeff Gural and his investors their 110% back for capital improvements when their lease is up? The state may want to either give the sports book to someone else to operate or take control themselves.

JEFF AND JOE WEIGH IN
With sports wagering imminent in New Jersey and potentially
on the fast track to implementation in New York, we reached out
to Meadowlands operator Jeff Gural and SOA of NY President Joe
Faraldo for comment on how sports wagering would affect racing
at The Meadowlands and Yonkers Raceway.
“It means I will probably break even or make a small profit, but
it does not solve the horse shortage or lack of purse money,” said
Gural, who made no mention of additional funds making its way
into the purse account, though he has been taking a loss in recent
years to keep the track’s lucrative stakes program in place.
Gural added that he expected the Thoroughbred horsemen
to ask for more dates and that could have an impact on the Fall
harness season. Additionally, Meadowlands CEO Jason Settlemoir
mentioned on Post Time with Mike and Mike that he is expecting
to be ready to take wagers by the start of the 2018 NFL season.
Faraldo had the following comments:
“New Jersey will be first up to bat, probably by June. The SBOA
of NJ can better speak to this right now. They will set precedent for
what, if anything, will go into purses. In New York we may be able
to carve out something for racing to secure us from more competition,
and from track and other operators looking to cultivate other
revenue streams to enhance their bottom lines at the expense of
racing. Unless purses are cut in by legislation or contract at least
from sports wagering done at tracks, OTBs or ADWs, I do not see
anything positive coming from this but rather only negatives.”
Faraldo added that he was unsure about how quickly the government
in New York might move on sports wagering at this time.
-

This fucking moron doesn't quite understand logic does he. Guys like Petrelli are deadbeats and get a license, guys like Walter get a zillion second chances and still are considered because no one gives a fuck about horse racing but if Wingsey got a DUI or didn't pay his support the state of New York would have him cleaning the shitter at McDonalds. Thoroughbred racing will be fine and if they lose a few tracks along the way contraction should have happen in all of racing a decade ago. Breeding numbers aren't coming back in either breed so cutting some tracks out of the equation is a good thing.
