Whats the proper tip
He slide the guy a TEN SPOT
Guy looked at him and gave it back
Rude am i right
-
Jesus... at 5% on a $10K (hypothetically) purse, he’s making $500 for less than 2 mins work. You take that by the hour?? You’re looking at $15k/ hr !!! He doesn’t want your $10 spot? Tell him to stick it! Most of them will take the $10 and buy a couple blunts and be happy!! Send him on down the road, Mate! He ain’t the only game in town !!!
-
Best tip to give a driver is BEFORE a race,to stay off the board, works every time
-
Why would you tip your driver? Did he give you special attention when your drinks needed refilling? Was your haircut extra sharp this month?
His compensation is set to reward him with greater earnings for doing a betterr job. Is that not enough? Should the drive tip the owner for putting him down on a winner?
-
What he finish in race? Maybe upset with himself if he knows he had bad drive.
Otherwise yeah rude. Plenty of talent out there.
ran 2nd
at pompano
few days ago
my pal feels bad now cus he should have given more
the driver declined to drive his horse this week,,
idk,,what to tell him
-
Whos the driver....ill send peschi to talk to him
-
When an owner slipped me a tip i never ever looked at it in his or her presence. I would politely thank them and tell them it wasn't necessary. Usually i would later split it with the groom. They're doing the shit work. I just steer them around the track
-
Got to be Wally!!!!!!!! Finished 2nd a lot the last few days at Pompano.... Just sounds like him too...
-
I used mostly two guys.
If I gave them $20 then we were at least live..
If they saw a $50 they knew to duck and ride.
That was pre casino racing

..again my pal is new bee in business..
he just thought he was doin the right thing
hes over it now
-
Nobody gets nothing. Arrangements already in place for fixed % beyond normal rates for stakes action and overnights. You want loyalty? Slide the groom a c note and dont be afraid to ask questions. Top notch catch drivers are at your discretion, but a ten spot gets you laughed at forever. ngc3 ngc3 ngc3. Let those hungry guys drive their way into the cash.
-
We never gave cash, except to grooms.
This was 30 years ago
Trainer said we're live, we gave trainer a $50-$75 win ticket, to be split with trainer, driver and groom.
Trainers and drivers got incentives, not cash.

split 50 dollar win ticket 3 ways? thats generous 73cv.2. should be live every week, and if not you are wasting money waiting on that next big split, IF the trainer sez so... ngc3
-
No reason to ever tip a driver unless you made a killing on the race! And don't be dumb enough to give it to him in the winners circle! And, in this case $10. is better not rendered!

Thanks for reading. We had a blast owning. Ours raced for purses of about $3k. A $20 win ticket at 3/1 doubled a driver's earnings on a winner. No one ever complained or took off for that reason.
It's hard to understand, I know. ngc3 ngc3
When you were a groom 35 years ago how much were people betting for you?

I can't speak for Fatboy but if I remember correctly I think I made somewhere between $35-$50 per week per horse back in 1977 when I started. Made extra on paddocks. I was broke but enjoyed myself..LOL

I can recall taking home $112.00 a week for rubbin 2....2 guys split 25 bux between them to take one to paddock also. Catch paddocks were usually 50. I made the mistake of going salary at some point soon after. Huge mistake...LOL!!! Had a great time and learned a ton as well. Travel was good too. tmbz1

1980 $225.00 $25 paddocks

Back in the day, grooms rarely had more than 2 horses, the best ones had 3! $50.-$75. per horse was generally the going rate. Today, it is not unusual for 2 people to take care of 10 head! On Saturday, usually the day when owners came by, it was customary to duke the groom!

Were you ever insulted like Fatboy when an owner made a $25 win bet for you back in the mid-late 80's?

Well too be honest I was already out of business as an active trainer or driver by mid 80’s.. ( I knew I didn’t have the talent to make any real money and I wanted a different life style) but to answer your question if I was still grooming or training at that time and an owner made a $25 win bet for me , I would not have been insulted..Heck I made such little money , I would have been happy with a burger and fries for a tip..

Grooms are making a ton? So, for a 6 day work week at 69 hours a week, a gross wage of $950.000 using your wage figures. Not making much in today's labor market.
If a person was to make $12.00 per hour for 40 hours is $480.00 a week. The 29 additional hours at time and 1/2= $522.00= $1002.00.
Backside workers in New York have had a great deal of support from the Department of Labor, recently. At the Thoroughbred tracks, the state has stepped in on behalf of grooms , hot walkers and stable hands and reclassified their status, resulting in minimum wage violations along with time and 1/2 for more than 40 hours a week. A multitude of trainers were fined and ordered to pay back wages. Chad Brown, the top earning trainer at Saratoga and also the #1 labor offender, ordered to repay his employees millions in unpaid wages.
The world is changing in the way lower level employees are compensated. $950.00 for a 69 hour , 6 day work week is no longer considered acceptable compensation.

Hi All . I know some guys are going to rip me but this is what I think . The grooms are making A LOT of money these days and they usually get a win bonus on paddock , plus they do usually do 2 paddocks a night which gives them 150 plus there weekly pay ( great money) so think about this, rub 5 = 500 a week - work 3 nights paddocking Total 6 at 75 a paddock that right do the math . FACT . Drivers make a ton , trainers make a ton ! But the second trainer works there asses off , that’s who you tip they make less then the grooms . Just my opinion
SOME TRUTH HERE tmbz1

If you know grooms working 30 hours a week making $600-$700 a week, they may be in the top 5% in their field. Are they in a union?
-
Hi All , wow ! Grooms work 7am to12 =5 hours a day 6 days a week = 30 hours in barn that’s 16.5 a hour and some rub six or seven horses which brings it up to 600 or 700 which brings barn work up to 20 a hour if they stay home . Now if they go to the paddock and do 2 paddocks for 75 = 150 for 5 hours that’s 30 a hour .sorry Just MATH !!!!!!! The Thoroughbred only pay 300 a week that’s why they got in trouble .FACT
THEY WORKIN FROM 6 TILL ONE AND MORE MOSTLY

What's a groom making, say $750 a week, doing for health insurance?
Too rich for Medicaid.
They all ObamaCare on 100% subsidy?
-
If grooms taking care of 5 head are working till noon or 1pm, when do they get vet work or shoeing?
-
If grooms taking care of 5 head are working till noon or 1pm, when do they get vet work or shoeing?
Shoes get done usually after horses jogged and fed breakfast
Vet usually comes late mornings or early afternoon with needs
That how term and my trainer has been doing it many yrs

We were never offered health insurance OR workmans comp. If you were handy, they looked after you....hardly a fair way to go, and I hope it has improved.
-

assistants around to shank the vet work horses, and hold for vet while instructing how to shoe per bossman....grooms snoozing/drinking, whatever...

It's a Dunkin Donuts now.
Yeah, saw that...Everything that was enjoyable up there is gone unfortunately..Ni ce memories though!!

Rude am i right
Disclose this ungrateful and disrespectful prick who drove your friends horse. Owners support this industry, your friend is new to the business and was probably really excited on how his horse performed. If you (the driver) don't want the owners money, thank the owner and then hand it to the groom; but, don't disrespect an owner!
Now, disclose this prick driver!

Actually
Guy saw my friend paddock
Apologize he was having a bad night
We all have them
He’s ok with it now my pal
Movin to Illinois and Indy racin for spring and summer

Awesome end to what appeared to be an unfortunately situation for a new owner.
-
I don't tip my driver for a good drive and I don't ask him for money back after a shitty one.
