Will 3 NYC Casinos force Monticello to close
« on: January 18, 2024, 09:22:18 AM »
I stopped at Resorts World Monticello yesterday and there was bus loads of Asians I’m guessing from NYC. I did see a few local farmers but not enough.

I don’t see Monticello racetrack surviving 5 years. When the NYC casinos open, the Asians stay in NYC hence no purse money can be generated.

what happens if/when MGM gets their casino and want to build a hotel where the racing oval is?
Monticello Raceway would be the closest thing to downstate NY racing.
Its close to many of the farms in orange county.
it opens up some interesting options....

Sounds to me like that there may be a hidden clause in the contract! If this is the case, someone better get a complete copy and scan it from top to bottom! If there is anything suspicious, then do the Math and see what is still left on it. Y'all know them people who do the contracts are very clever when it comes to the use of certain words and meanings! Maybe SCM investigation has a lull in their schedule! 11.wp

Monticello has become nothing but a video game for our phones and iPads. The track does absolutely nothing to bring in new fans or make the experience enjoyable for live fans, the few that there are. This is no longer a racetrack. It is a bunch of horses running around their oval twice. I used to love this place. It was alive with fans, up and coming horsemen, good food choices and exciting nightime racing. Now this place is nothing but garbage just like the towns around it. There is no reason to keep this pathetic dump open any longer.

Apparently it is still relevant. 550K in 9 races today. Many harness tracks don't come close to that.

$500K a day, five days a week ads what $60-$70K a week to the purse account? That is like $1,400 per race , on average.

Last time I checked, Monticello only races 4 days per week.

"Typically, approximately 7.25% of a live on-track bet is allocated to the horseman’s purse. This ensures that a significant portion of the wagered money directly supports the rewards for the participating horsemen"

Since there is no live handle to speak of---what is the % when the handle is off-track??

Interesting question as far as Im concerned--as casinos do not care about anyone betting on track or encourage it or give incentives.

This seems to me like the Trojan Horse scenario---come in--kill the live handle--make everything off track-costs 0-% go down for horsemen--then Casinos cry "see racing is returning 0 profit-we must decouple."
Decouple--Casinos increase profits--1000's lose jobs, Farms get sold- redeveloped --- >:( >:( >:(
I prefer the racetracks get better looked after.

Come on, Bond. Your an intelligent man. You really believe track and casino owners are sabotaging their own product, so they can decouple ? That they have a product that was or can be profitable but they just refuse to support it?
How many different ways can one market support all the gambling products in one market?
Monticello, just like every other harness track has not had a product that generate enough support from the customers they serve in almost 30 years.
There is no chicken and the egg scenario going on here. It is clear, the reason there is no support from the track owners is, there is no demand from customers. There is no food vendors, parking attendants, bars, floor attendants, and just a couple of betting clerks is, there is nobody there.
The track owner did not wake up one day and chase the crowd and all the vendors away. Competition for the gambling and entertainment dollar gobbled up what was one a solid business.
So, after 30 years of one failed plan after another. Decades of millions of dollars in subsidies, should this support of a losing proposition start drafting an exit plan or, just continue to throw good money after bad?
