I'll rephrase his question to remove the love of the horse.  How long should a trainer or a owner hold on to a horse that isnt performing hoping he turns it around?  Or when do you give up on a young horse that isnt meeting expectations hoping he gets better with age and experience?

depends on your expectations going in? If you entered this game just to make money then you are already a loser and the longtime guys( aka deep pocket guys) know you hafta sit at the table awhile and eat a few hands before the payoff, if ever, arrives. Comes down to disposable income levels.

I can give you two different perspectives..I owned and trained many many years ago, kept the same horses and against advice loved my horses as pets ..i barely broke even each year and left the biz to make money elsewhere in life ..My friend who is still in the business after 30 plus years never fell in love with his horses and focused on claimers ..He places them where they can be 1st or second with no fear of them getting claimed ..It's a business plain and simple to him and that's the way he operates ..it works for him to this day .

Well said.....some love them and just compound their losses ,  I usually kept them way too long.  Not sure even jamming them today you can make money anywhere but top purse tracks.  Lower levels just a hobby or addiction.

Ego. You're always hoping the next equipment change, shoeing change, vet work, will do the trick.

For alot od people its relaxing and enjoyable.  Make a few buck, lose a few bucks. IT IS HAPPINESS.  keeps you busy and away from the spouse and the REAL WORLD. no harm to anyone

MY LESSON WAS SIMPLE
DONT FALL IN LOVE WITH THEM..
WAS OK TO ENJOY BEING AROUND SOME OF THEM WAY MORE THAN OTHERS FOR SURE
THEY HAVE CHARACTER
SOME MORE THAN WHO OWNED THEM..AND SOME LOTS LESS 73cv.2
