Welcome back!! First start is a winning one. It's amazing watching this guy. Has to be the best of all time
-
Not any where near the best, like Case, O’Donnell, Campbell

Keep smoking that pipe. I'm sorry but when guys like Gingras Tetrick miller McCarthy's all admit that Dex "Is that good" it's time to wake up. Case odonnell and Campbell were great for there time but Dexter is leaps and bounds better
-
It is all about the power, he gets all the best horses. He rarely ever has to get after a horse, and when he does, it doesn't usually workout very well for him.
-
Dexter excellent driver
But not in the same league as
John Campbell in his prime
It’s not even close
Campbell best ever
Period
End of story
Stop It u guys quit playing
Dexter not even in top three
Campbell
O’Donnell
Timmy
Then
Yannick or Dexter or LUC
-
Herve
Case
Buddy
Pierce
-
Dunn gets the best horses because he's the best. It was not that way when he came over. It was Tetrick, Miller, & Gringras battling for top honors. IMO Dunn is by the best. I like Todd McCarthy too.

Both of those guys already received the groom of the month award.

Difference in time, equipment, etc. Cannot make correct judgments on non-contemporaries. Joe O'Brien was great, at Hollywood Park. Was said to have the greatest Trotter all around. They called her simply " The Mare." ( Fresh Yankee)Is she still the greatest in your opinion? Most of you weren't born then. Adios Vic was every bit as good on a mile track as "Mickey" and so on and so on. I had a horse that briefly held the record for 3 yr. old pacers at The Red Mile, 2:03.2 hooked to a Jerald Wooden Sulky. Hard to believe! These guys all come and go. How about James McDonald? I think they all deserve their due for their accomplishes in our present time without silly comparisons.

Are you in your 20's or 30's ?
No knock on Dexter, I think he is excellent but he isn't close to Herve, Buddy, Carmine and many others.

AS YOU CANNOT JUDGE HORSES FROM DIFFERENT ERAS---YOU SURELY CANNOT JUDGE DRIVERS! THE QUALITY OF THE OVERALL DRIVING COLONY TODAY IS LESS THAN THE OLD DAYS WHEN SO MANY WERE DRIVERS AND TRAINERS. THERE ARE LESS TOP DRIVERS IN EVERY RACE---JUST AS THERE IS LESS TOP HORSES. WE BREED 8,000 MARES PER YEAR AND GET SOME GOOD HORSES BUT IN THE OLD DAYS THERE WERE 25,000 FOALS AND TRUST ME THE BETTER CHANCE TO HIT A HOMERUN. FURTHER, TODAYS RACES HAVE LESS DEPTH THAN THE OLD DAYS.
HAVE THERE BEEN A CROP LIKE NIHILATOR, DRAGONS LAIR, PERSHING SQUARE, CHAIRMANOFTHEBOAR D, SILVER ALMAHURST, ETC. THEY WERE ALL TOP HORSES AND THERE WERE MANY MORE THAT I DONT RECALL. THEY WOULD TAKE TURNS COMING AT THE LEADERS---THERE WERE NO EASY WINS IN THE OLD DAYS.

After watching harness racing for 50 years I've seen all the great ones. I think the difference between all of them is very slim. They all have good instincts and good hands. But it all starts with having the best horses to drive. Dunn gets the best drives that's why he wins the most now. But to say he's better than Campbell,Fillion,Tetrick,Case or even Lew Williams. NO way.

I’m probably about your age and have seen many drivers. The best I’ve ever seen at keeping a horse alive to the wire was Billy Haughton. None of this jumping around and whaling away on a horse…. If I had the choice of any driver I’ve seen, when the big $$$$ are down it would be Ron Pierce.
-
There have been many great drivers. Some had more talent than others. Dunn just seems to be more natural, confident by the way he sits in the bike. I don't think he is any better than the rest of the drivers mentioned and not mentioned but he is at the top of his game, and he gets a lot of the best horses to drive.

In all the conversation, let us not forget the only horse to ever win "Horse of the Year" three times whilst being driven by a human anchor, Frank Ervin. That horse was Bret Hanover. How do we compare Bret with Bulldog or Allywag. Every Dog has it's day. In my time, Billy Haughton was considered one of the greats, however, owners lined up to give him blue chip horses, Grand Circuit and overnighters. Was he better than "The Redman", and who was the better "Redman", Carmine or Bob Farrington, who actually was the original "Redman" and then let us not forget Rambling Willie, Bob's ill bred gelding who tore up all the great Free-for-Allers of the day. I am of the opinion that having been a part of this forum for, what seems like forever, having raced standardbreds through the 60's, 70's 80's into the 90's, that there are far more gamblers here than Horsemen.
-
Rambling Willie was not an Illinois bred. Believe it or not he was bred in Indiana.
-
The ill does not stand for Illinois, it stands for badly bred, as ill bred. I have always believed that he was a product of a midnight deal with a good stallion.

Thanks for the clarification. tmbz1 tmbz1

There are three or four more Dexter Dunn's in NZ who would tear it up here
The reason they are so good and potentially better drivers in NZ and Australia is bigger fields, all different distances etc.
-
Casey was the best at keeping one alive at the wire.
-
When Dexter came here, yannick, Timmy, Miller, were already established. Dexter came here and EARNED himself the right to the best horses. He just walked in and drove rings around the best drivers we have with inferior stock. Then and only then did he start getting respect from the trainers and started using him and getting horse power. He is the best driver in the sport bar none.
Anyone who thinks Yannick or Timmy or anyone else are better are clueless.

I used to post here quite a bit. The reason I don't and it really isn't important, is a point was made that is a non-starter when the word 'Clueless" just had to be thrown in as if the writer knows something every else doesn't.+
-
Kooter, you obviously don’t have any opinion on the subject since you just focused on my “clueless” choice of words. Sorry if that offended you 🤦♂️
-
Everybody has an opinion as do I. I just don't think it necessary to express that opinion to the detriment of others. I agree that Dexter is a great driver. I will also say just for laughs that Aaron Merriman always leads the National driver standings at Northfield where he usually wins 120,000 races a year. I refuse to offer an opinion on that topic and I'm sorry if I came across harsh.

Dexter competes against so fewer top drivers than the elite reinsmen did in the glorius 80s-90s heyday.
Given that, it'd be pretty darn hard to put him ahead of Campbell, O'Donnell, Filion or Case.
But to even talk about him in the same conversation with those greats shows how fortunate the few remaining harness fans are to watch Mr. Dunn in his prime.

Who gives as dead rats ass if you post here or not? Talk a long walk off a short plank a-hole and go get lost.
-
At least now I know where I stand with you and believe me that's very important to me because you probably have the best opinion here.

This statement from Lauren Tritton on driving here sums up why Down Under drivers are so good
“The racing style here is a lot different compared to home,”
Tritton said. “I’m still getting comfortable. And not comfortable
as in I don’t feel right out there; it’s more of being comfortable
with the way the races are run. Back home I feel there’s a lot
more tactics involved, there’s a lot of bumper cars if you want
to put it that way. We’re allowed to push out, make a lot more
moves. Back home there’s no holes, you don’t give holes
at all. What also is quite different is that we don’t drive
to the tote board, where here it’s kind of post positions
and the tote board that dictate where you put a horse.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Pushing out is great if you have the horse who can bully the one on the outside and force him 3 wide
-
we all gush over statistics --- but what I like about a driver is not only can he produce results -- but when he gets off the bike does he have the knowledge to tell the trainer how to make the horse better....
I had good drivers that could get a certain amount out of my horses.
I had average drivers that could tell me what they see and feel while in race mode to make the horse better.
Just my thoughts
-
Lauren Tritton---"What also is quite different is that we don’t drive
to the tote board, where here it’s kind of post positions
and the tote board that dictate where you put a horse."
Very true
IMHO-its what ruins racing in USA. The same drivers in every race-and most have preconceived ideas before the gate opens and look at the tote board to determine their tactics like Lauren says.-leading to Indian File racing with few moves.
After watching real racing from France-and Down Under---its infinitely more entertaining-and most horses get their chance to win.
Here- the ones designated by drivers before the gate even opens and dragged to the back of the field--even if it was actually capable to win--it cant because it was positioned to lose.
This hurts racing as a spectacle-and gamblers drop off.

Very accurate statement! Unfortunately the drivers don't look to hurt each other. As an owner I want my horse raced to win. Wether I'm 1-9 or 99-1 race the horse!!!

As an owner I also expect the best effort everytime it races. But some couldn't care less it's costing the owner money. They just hop on the next horse.
-
Some of these catch drivers are the biggest assholes you will ever meet. Arrogant fucksticks don't care about owners or what they have invested. They just move to the next race.
-

tmbz1-As an owner also-Im more concerned that certain drivers -when driving a horse that's either not one they normally drive-or from a big stable--they will use that horse to gain favors from other drivers-- so when they get on one of their
"own"-they look for a return of the favor.ie the owner gets screwed but the driver earns a future reward.
When looking at French racing or down under racing-this BS doesn't seem to be happening--it's every man for himself and may the best horse win.
-
I want a horse when they get back. I don't want them gutted just for shits and grins. If you are 99/1 there is a fucking reason, race accordingly.
-
Dex has been ice ice cold to start the year!

If their 99/1 they shouldn't be in the race.

Dustin Blumenfeld
Russell Rash
You bet, Russell Rash and Sudden Squall!
-
Tragic ending but always thought Eric Ledford has loads of ability and then when someone ask Gene Riegle about Eric, Gene said I’ve never seen anyone who could drive one better. I’m not saying best ever but he could drive.
-
Good driver, especially with his father's horses, lol, but not in the league with Dexter.
-

Joe marsh jr was a beast aswell

Kids and b drivers
John Campbell
Is still the best of all time
Lachance is my choice for second best right there with O’Donnell
-
ngc3 Plopers are dreamers or on the crack pipe. Dexter Dunn is an excellent driver GOAT??? Please. High tailed it out of NZ being raided by cops for race fixing . His stats on a half are worse than Jimmy Marohn jr and last year YANNICK had the same stats at the big M.
Timmy TETRICK has over 12000 wins at age 40 I seriously doubt Dexter will top that . Dexter fortunate as he’s on roll and lucky to be on top horses. Let’s see what happens next few years before starting this GOAT chat.
