Meadowlands Statement on Lasix Ban

Meadowlands Racetrack STATEMENT ON LASIX:

"In light of the recent circumstances in Thoroughbred racing surrounding the welfare of the horses, all of horse racing has come under increased scrutiny. While the rate of catastrophic breakdowns in Standardbred racing is but a fraction of what it is with the Thoroughbred, the public does not make that distinction.

The health and welfare of our horses has been a top priority throughout President and CEO Jeff Gural's tenure at The Meadowlands and a great deal of time and money has been spent in efforts to eradicate Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) from Standardbred racing.

Over the past few months in response to questions on the use of the diuretic Lasix as a PED, a consortium of Thoroughbred tracks is taking steps to reduce or eliminate the use of Lasix on race day.

It is the intention of The Meadowlands as the flagship track of the standardbred industry to join that movement and proceed in such a way as to insure the best interests of our equine athletes.

A proposal to address the use of Lasix as a race day medication at The Meadowlands has been submitted to the New Jersey Racing Commission (NJRC).
The submitted proposal states that beginning in 2020, no 2-year-old Standardbred will be permitted to use Lasix when racing at The Meadowlands. Further, in 2021 the track's signature stakes race, The Meadowlands Pace, will become Lasix free. It is noteworthy that the marquee stake in all of Standardbred racing, the Hambletonian at The Meadowlands, has not permitted the use of Lasix throughout its 93 year history.

In discussion with several Standardbred trainers, the consensus was that 2-year-old horses should not race with Lasix and should instead be given time away from the track to recover if they are indeed diagnosed with Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage (EIPH). Over the entire 2018 season at The Meadowlands, only seven 2-year-olds raced with Lasix .

At the end of the 2021 racing season we will review these changes, consider any revisions to the practice in Thoroughbred racing and adjust as necessary.

While we recognize the therapeutic benefits of Lasix, our concern is with the optics and feel it is important to show that we take the health and safety of our horses very seriously.  We believe this is the best approach while we observe how even stricter measures work for the thoroughbred industry."

A couple of points about Jewffrey's latest farce:

1.   The Fuhrer speaks about his long program of trying to eradicate PEDs.  Well, how about giving us the data.  How many tests did Jackie Chan do and how many positives did they find?  How many horsemen did Dick(head) Cote bust in the 5+ years he's been on the job?  Why hasn't the Tablecloth Clad Heeeeb checked the vet records like they did to Pena?  Bottom line is the cocksucker talks a good game but the data doesnt back up a single thing he says.

2.   "Optics?"   Gimme a break.  The classless Hebrew has NEVER been concerned about optics.  When he banned all Mexicans, he wasn't worried about optics.  When he banned all Yonkers drivers, he wasn't worried about optics.  When he personally went after Brian Sears and then let him come back after the titty-twisting episode in FL, he wasn't worried about optics.  Anybody that dresses like a Duck Dynasty whino, isn't worried about optics.  More bullshit.

I don't care one way or the other about Lasix.  I can tell you that the public at large that DOES care about lasix in harness racing is less than 0.001%.  So the hook-nosed heeeeeeb is just grandstanding because he, too, is attention-starved, know-nothing prick.  Until next time, darlings......... ......HEIL HITLER!!

Correct me if I am wrong, but LASIX masks a lot of the shit these big wigs are using. Horses are put on LASIX even if it is not needed.

Lets see if races still go as fast without LASIX.

Lets see the percentages of the big boys once this takes affect.

I am racing 5 horses and only  one of them is on Lasix.  I've heard that it is used to mask drugs but I have never heard what drugs it masks.      My attitude about Lasix is simple.   How many times have you heard of people going to the doctor or to the emergency room, feeling weak and dizzy only to be told that they were just dehydrated?  We give our horses Lasix and no water before we ask them to perform at  maximum effort. In other words, we dehydrate them on purpose. I am not against Lasix and I would not advocate doing away with it, but I caution you all that it is possible that it is a mistake to use it when your horse isn't bleeding.

I agree with Joe and Buffy on this one--Gural just Grandstanding.
AGAIN he picks and chooses who will and who wont be able to do something.
Its just plain wrong.
IMHO--Lasix has been seriously abused-thats true--most horses bleed-but those that only bleed minimally are put on Lasix-with no proof it does anything for those.
It could EASILY be simplified--eg -you can ONLY be put on Lasix if the horse comes back from racing after bleeding from BOTH nostrils--THATS a bleeder.
Just put those on Lasix at least the public will understand that--instead of seeing nearly EVERY horse run on drugs-giving racing a bad name and allowing people like Gural to use it for Political purposes.. Exactly what they do in human sport--eg asthmatics can perform on puffers-with doctors script.

The reason Lasix, not including its side effects should not be allowed is simple. There is no scientific proof that it works. In fact, ask 5 vets or go online and research why horses bleed and you will get 5 different theories ranging from high blood pressure, infection, airway obstruction, clotting issues etc. How can you use a drug when you aren't even sure what is causing the symptom which in this case is EIPH?

Same with many medications. Usually guesswork.
