Pompano star

Really crazy question, does anyone remember a horse named Pompano Star at Green mountain Park. This horse would sit last every race until the stretch and come home like a freight train. Had a great win record. Memories from the 70's.

I don’t remember him, but remember JM Gregory breaking his maiden on an off track with Carl LaBombard, winning in 2:43 ( not a misprint). By the end of the year, won at Saratoga in 2:01. Any other horse lower his record by 42 seconds in one year?!

JM Gregory was a nice horse. Before Saratoga went to a stone dust surface the year end races in the slop would go, oh so slow. Not many went in 2:42 but 2:20 to 2:30 was common.

I remember Pompano Star. I was stabled right next to him at Liberty Bell at the end of his career. I also watched him at Green Mountain. His owner and trainer was Bob Mydlowski.

To The Exporter- I should have clarified that JM Gregory broke his maiden at Green Mtn, notorious for the track thawing in late Winter, leading to 2:40+ times, or races reduced to 3/4 mile, which often went in 2:00.

I don’t remember the horse but I do remember going to this track in a cold month. It was snowing on top of a half frozen track. I bet a horse named Candy something. The horse broke immediately spotting the field around 20 lengths. By the 3/4 mark every other horse broke and my horse Candy got back on stride, avoided all the breakers and won by at least 15 lengths. Time of the mile 2:41. I never laughed so hard in my life. What an experience!

This thread has gotten a little off track, but……….I remember nights at GM where the track was so bad that the starting gate couldn’t pull away from the field, so at the start the wings were folded and the #5 had to figure out how to get around the car.  Talk about a handicapping nightmare!
