Cumberland's lack of speed
« on: April 22, 2023, 10:43:36 AM »
Wagering showed another big increase for the third day of Cumberland’s Spring meeting. Bettors pushed $188,482 through the windows, which was up approximately $66,000 from the same date last year, despite two fewer races....Case picked up his first win of 2023....the last 1/4 times at this track are the slowest anywhere most likely in the USA, with many over 30:0!  Is it the surface or the horses?

You can only go so fast when you’re using an abacus.

Partly the weather, partly the layout of the track but mostly the horses.

Could wagering be  up due to the post time change? Last year wasn't post time 11:00 AM?

last winter 11am. spring started at 3 but moved to 4 in may.  wagering could be up due to a lot of 8 horse fields. last spring 7 was the limit for reasons unknown.

last year 8 Across was not deemed safe. This year It's ok? Did they change the layout of the track?

or is a handle thing?

Minimal banking is not  helping the speed or the soundness!

Now they will be rolling the gate a hundred m.p.h. so the 8 won't be able to get up on it.  Where there is a will, there's a way!

tracks in better shape now than ever. still turns are tough. 8 horses 7 horses i think thats been a random decision with no real reason behind it. 8 is better for betting and truly the 7 and 8 are at a huge disadvantage as with all half mile tracks.  gate speed is not consistaint which sucks but cumby is not the only track where there is not a consistaint starter speed. times will get quicker as this past weekend was also cool and breezy.

ONE BIG plus for Cumberland is they offer a barn area for very very reasonable rates where most tracks have gotten rid of the barn areas. all classes are able to race there for decent money. Nothing to shout about, but without Cumberland, who knows what will happen to racing in Maine?

yes cumberland is all southern maine has got. stables are a great plus. most of the fairgrounds have none now. agree that without cumby what will happen. no new track in sight despite being told 0ne or two years at cumberland.          did anyone notice yesterday that after aaron hall went down in the 9th he was allowed to drive in the 10th. for years at scarborough and cumberland the judges used to make you sit out a race after going down. just wondering why the change. same judges.    handle has been much higher this year. maybe the boat show draws them in.

no stalling at cumby. the crowd has to get to one of the two tellers, then hope the mutual machine works.

shout out
