Title: When will politicians go after harness racing?
Post by: buffalo believer on May 04, 2018, 03:51:52 PM
It would win an election if a politician recommended redirecting subsidies to a more worthwhile cause (one idea would be to reduce state college cost).  Why hasn’t this been done this yet?

Probably because it would destroy the lives of countless people, least of all horsemen who you feel are all low lifes and crooks! Farmers, farriers, local merchants, mutual clerks, track employees, vets and countless more! Understand that just the taxes paid by lottery winners far exceeds the entire budget of the harness industry and its all a drop in the bucket to the bureaucratic mess that we live in! So go suck on a big one you freakin moron!

Racing doesn't effect any local merchants. No fans and the horsemen just ship in and out. Mutual clerks (Both guys) at each track can find other work but they will have to work now. Same for the 2 track employees AND FUCK the VETS. Those degenerates should all be in Jail. They ruined racing.

We could argue all day. History is full of industries and jobs that have gone by the wayside. Car industry, coal industry are just two that come to mind. Those industries employ a fraction of what they once did.Humans will always adapt and find a way forward. Harness racing might never completely end but it will be a fraction of what it is today. I don’t know when. Young people have zero interest, game is for old people, over priced shitty food, horse shortages, too many tracks, too many gambling opportunities, management that wants racing to end and on and on. The train has left the station and there is absolutely nothing that can bring it back. What we can do is slow it down but nobody seems to care. I’ve had a lot of fun the past 45 years. However, I’m worn out and don’t give a fuck anymore. I can’t beat or join Allard, Burke and others. I can’t continue to pay more and race for less. Attrition s taking its toll.

“Countless people”, seriously!!  the subsidies help a small number relative to those they would help if redirected.  Yes in every transaction there are winners and losers....slot money will be reduced and redirected.....ju st a matter of time....

New York State already reduced SUNY for in state kids

New York State already reduced SUNY for in state kids

Coumo sold the casino plan to the State Republicans in the NYC area who, were against the casinos by, showing the $300 million a year needed to expand the cities pre-K education would be generated by the Aqueduct casino. He also got to take away the accomplishment from Mayor Di Bozo by funding the program with no tax increase. Shoving up Mayor di Bozo's as once again.
So, casino money is going to good use. But, more revenue can be redirected in similar roles.

While we are at it lets give more tax payer money to support illegals. Let's give free college to every kid. Let's give every person in the US a 15 dollar a hour job. No matter the jib. These are all things Democrat socialist want to just give away.

They just completed an experiment such as give everyone money in Sweden. For about 2 years, the Swedish government gave every unemployed person a special stipend of a few hundred a month for the time they were unemployed. The goal was to reduce unemployment by giving people more wearwithall to prepare for a new job. To pay for better clothing, a more intense job search, moving expenses, vocational training, special skills training, networking... They stopped the program as it was a complete failure as almost everyone extended their periods of unemployment. The jobs they did get were no different than the jobs the others secured before the program.
The time tested notion: Necessity is the mother of invention is as true today then was at anytime.

A friend of mine who lives in Sweden told me a  few years ago that it's very hard to get a job there. He seemed to think many people wanted to get a job if they could and that there wasn't alot of freeloaders because of the country's strict immigration policy. He said the Swedes must like their system because they keep on voting for it.

It is totally disingenuous when the USA is compared to a country like Sweden for quality of life , social and economic views. With a vast amount of natural resources and small population, in addition to average tax rate of better than 50% earnings, it is no wonder the social services of Sweden are so generous. The entire Swede has a population not much greater that of New York City.

Who was comparing the 2 countries? I was just making a simple point that it sounds like jobs are hard to get in Sweden, implying that maybe that was a factor in the experiment failing.
