Are C level big Stake Races beneficial ?
« on: July 26, 2020, 07:23:24 AM »
Plainridge today will host two stake races.

100k featuring Shartin
250k trot, great race  featuring Manchengo and  Atlanta

While it may draw some harness fans eyes to the track, on a Sunday afternoon, probably not any other horse players eyes as Saratoga, Del Mar, etc will be racing.

My question is, looking at the list of trainers and drivers that are driving in for the race, will compete and then take the money back to their home state/track..... Is this money, total of 350k, best spent on these one off races or better spent in publicity or put into the purse account for local horsemen. Like a mulitiple leg series race for local horsemen to race for multiple weeks.

I will check in this afternoon, around 3:20p if I remember. Doubtful that on Monday I will be clamoring to check back in to Plainridge to see what's happening.

You couldn't be more correct.  It is devastating to the local horsemen $350,000 gone from the purse account to stables that come and go.  They bring nothing into the local economy or track purse account.  That is one of the few things that the COVID 19 has done in ohio almost all of those type races were cancelled this year.  Unfortunately Northfield is still having the Milstein where $250,000 will go out of the state to a group of c class 3yr old pacers.  No top notch horses will even show up for the race there.  They had to change it to an invitational after the 1st year because no one would nominate to a $400,000 race there.  In one race they will give away the equivalent of 3 days or racing and none will go to a local horseman.

I don't know where the money came from but they got a world record for a trotting mare on a 5/8s so from a publicity point of view they got what they wanted.

days of a good field making a differance are gone. 40 years ago you got the attendance and handle. now the money would be much better spent on the local horsemen. raise purses a little. write series for locals with bigger purses, ectra.
