Years ago, when a groom rubbed 2-3 horses, we alway shook out the hay flakes, inspected for mo0ld or excess dust and sprinkled the hay pile with water to keep the dust down.
why do they just throw a flake in the stall now? Lazy or, overworked.

To encourage the horse to stay away from sulking in the back of the stall.

COULD BE MILLPINS OF REASONS BUT THE ONE I LIKE IS BEING ABLE TO LOOK DOWN THE SHED AT A GLANCE AND SEE HOW THE HAY CONSUMPTION IS GOING, PLUS THEY DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO PAW AT IF IN BAG VS ON THE GROUND.  MANY USE HAY RACK INSIDE STALL AS WELL....WASTE ALOT ON GROUND AS WELL VS THE BAG...JUST A FEW THOUGHTS CUKEPARK tmbz1

Horse folks mentality. What the winning stable does the losers do the same. Like Micky D's. Everyone followed. If your not smart enough to think of it, steal the idea from the winner. BORING!!!

Google "slow feed hay netting" for the proper answer

Some people like to hang the hay to keep it off the floor and dust and some think they can chew and swallow it better leading to better digestion. I always fed it on the ground with a little water on it.

I tried the hay bags and it is basically useless. As the horses pull the hay out of the bag, most of the hay falls on the ground anyway. It does give the horse something to do. But a drawback of the hay bags at the front of the stall is that when the horse pulls all of the hay out of the bag, they lean down to get the extra that fell out of the bag. And many get their heads under the gate or the webbing, scare themselves and pop the gate off of its screw eyes and voila-they are running around the barn area. Have to use bungee cords to hold the gate down. ;D

runners are more nervous and moody by nature. hay bags are like pacifiers and keep them occupied and engaged instead of sulking in the back of the stall.

they are like prima donnas compared to Standardbreds.

The hay in the bag is all show and no go.  It's unnatural for a horse to grace from above but in the old days the runners and the harness did this to make the grooms work harder for the $7 a week.  There is no deeper meaning to this.  It's a psychological thing too when you photos show that the horse has "food"  Hay bags are not natural and they are dangerous. It's just a show.   END OF STORY!

Only used bag when coming back to the farm after racing.Put it on the floor of the stall let them keep their head down.
