Title: Gural and Settlemoir send mixed messages
Post by: stanetelman on December 04, 2022, 07:22:12 PM
“The industry has seen enormous progress since the horse racing bill was passed in 2019,” said track Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Jason Settlemoir. “Everyone in the industry owes a resounding thank you to Gov. Phil Murphy and the members of the New Jersey State Legislature."

But Meadowlands CEO Jeff Gural paints a different picture of the future.
"Unlike all of our competitors who receive massive subsidies from slots, the standardbred industry in New Jersey only receives $10 million which we share with the breeders and Freehold. Because I am a horsemen I also give $3 million to $4 million per year from our sports betting profits for purses, even though this year I expect we will lose over $5 million on racing.
Next year is the last year of the subsidy and without it we will be doomed because I am obligated under a law that the horsemen advocated to race a minimum of 90 days at the Meadowlands in order to have sports betting."

How many days did the Meadowlands have harness racing race this year?

I don't see a mixed message here. To me it is quite clear. Gural is gaining in age and loosing interest carrying harness racing on his wallet. He also said in this statement
..."at least the younger people will know I tried..."
Under the current law, as long as there is a sports book at the Meadowlands, there must be a race meet with the statutory number of dates. You can only carve the purse money up so many ways. So, 2 major stake races must go. And, The 10 million in state funding, split between Freehold and Monmouth sunsets at the end of 2023.
This purse account also includes 2-3 million he gifts through his sports book.
So, the message is clear, trouble is on the horizon and he is getting to old to play Santa Clause.

Mr Gural--doesn't look healthy to me at all. This is bad news for Meadowlands.
Not sure what will happen if he suddenly disappears.

Agreed, Bond. Some doors will close. Let's see what opens.

whomever would take over probably are going to shift 2-3 million over from the Sports book..

I am no Gural fan, but two things he says I believe

1) That he's taking money from Sports betting to Meds Purse Account
2) "Everyday I turn the lights on the track, we lose money."

When he first saw an opportunity for sports betting, he openly refused to share any revenue with the purse account. If not for a horseperson revolt to his comments, he still wouldn't be sharing a dime.

he picks and chooses who can cheat,

Ake, Millers, Bongiornos and Crawfords too

Jen B got another positive test in Harrah`s Philadelphia a month or so ago

the ruling:
Ms. Bongiorno is responsible for the positive test. BOSTON finished 1st but has been disqualified. Purse money earned ($7,200) by BOSTON must be returned within ten days of this ruling.

Ms. Bongiorno is fined $1,000 but Gural covers that?

she never has positive tests @ Meadowlands... hmmm

In 2015, the Father Bongiorno had several positives in PA. Gural let him off though caught a lot of criticism. Eventually, all horses were moved out of the Father's name. Doubtful they will have current issues racing at Meadowlands, at least for a while

Do you remember when Joe said in an interview that his dad told him to race their horse easy ?
They kept Joe off of the TV for a few months. That's all.

Jeff does pick & choose. He does get some credit for trying to clean up the sport.

Might get some credit if he didn't race his own horses at his own track. Otherwise he's simply thinning his competition

According to Nick Salvi, Meadowlands stakes administrator, "The on-track handle at The Meadowlands on Meadowlands’ races is always less than 10 per cent of the handle and sometimes far less than that.
“So, it’s not hard to do the math even if you’re going to be generous and say that the off-track dollars bet at The Meadowlands result in four per cent that goes to the track and is split between the track and the purse account. You’re talking about $120,000 on a $3-million night. That’s what it is. That kind of paints the picture.”
"Like Jeff said The Meadowlands is going to lose $5 million in operating costs on racing. That’s an alarming statement because all anybody’s used to seeing are the big handle numbers that Dave [Little] writes about when we have a good night at the races. They don’t understand the mathematics. People don’t know that.”
