Yonkers handle can be all over the place. Last night they a $20,000 handle in one early race and a $87,000 handle in a later race. That later race included a $48,000 Pick 5 pool which means this money actually bet from the 5th race. Monday night they had a low of $25,000 to a high of $67,000. There isn’t a lot of consistency at YR.

There is consistency.. low handle but it matches the quality of racing and the facilities.

Parked I respectfully disagree with your last comment. The quality of horses, maybe drivers too, could be the best, night in and night out, at Yonkers. The Meadowlands used to be the best before cutting back to 2-3 nights a week and carding way too many amateur driver races. When YR can card full fields on Monday night, you cannot find better quality overnight type horses.

Duke where do you want the horses and drivers to go? Meadowlands 2 nights a week? Maybe since Gural could dump all the amateur that he hates. Pocono Downs? I don’t know how that would work, maybe. Yonkers is a 99% simulcast signal racing facility. No one goes so I get you saying to close the place. But why? If MGM can stand this situation why should we care if the stands are empty. What they should do is build a modern, comfortable paddock. That dungeon needs to go.

Drivers and horses would find a home to the extent deserving. Just a disgraceful use of government subsidies to keep this track going. Better off giving the $ back to taxpayers.Certain ly be beneficial to reduce outrageous purses and move more money to breeding/sire stakes.  Plus, if you noticed, some of the more notorious horse abusing barns were  situated in yonkers.  Not many trainers still there deserving of plaudits. Presents a bad optic for horse racing. Plus 1/2 mile tracks useless.

Personally I think there is too much market saturation, or at a minimum overlap of racing in most states.  The handles are generally minimized in most states that have competing tracks running at the same time. Which in turn lowers viewing audience and slows the handle build.

What we have is the result of a decreased horse population. Gural warned about this 10 years ago. How many good horses can you import from down under. At yonkers , I have seen races with 6 of 8 from southern hemisphere and now Ireland, too.
This does not seem to be a problem in Ohio. They breed about 3 times more than NY and NJ combined.

Bartlett dives odds on favorites all night. The trainers are the top chemists. A well meant horse with a good post leads to chalk. Single file racing does nothing to change that. Yonkers should be exciting. 5-8 loaded horses n most races. If most were trying it would shake things up. Instead they take turns & an awful product.

heard it said we breed and foal only half the numbers of horses today that we did 30/40 years ago. Something like 25k as compared to 45k in the glory days

When had the Govt ever given back any tax money unless they are buying votes ?

In NY state not likely; point is there could be better usage.

Over the yrs ive supported subsidies to racing commuinity in this state. My thinking was $ better spent on upstate commuinities as nyc is corruption central. I dont quite buy the numbers racing community puts out for standardbreds being plus plus financial benefit to economy but frankly a lot of gvt $ going out door in this state and no reason racing commuinity should not get a share. And there are some jobs involved.

Yonkers though is causing me to doublethink my support. Absolutely shameful handle and little effort imo to improve quality or commuinuty value of industry. A lot of  nonState folks (for example allard)  profitting from yonkers. Claiming game is disgrace there too. Put some of this $ into ny state bred commuinity.
