MAYWOOD TRIFECTA GETS INQUIRY
Neil Milbert
CHICAGO TRIBUNE
The Illinois Racing Board said Monday it is investigating the result of a recent harness race at Maywood Park.
The Tribune has learned the board is investigating the 10th race on Nov. 6 in which the 7-6-1 trifecta combination linking Thorn Eagle, Ultra Osborne and Midnight Eagle paid $1,492.20 for a $3 bet.
Bill Bissett, executive director of the Illinois Racing Board, confirmed an investigation. ''There`s a trifecta race at Maywood under investigation,'' Bissett said Monday. ''That`s all I can say at the moment.''
At this stage, the matter is in the hands of the harness track`s state stewards, Tim Schmitz and Bob Milburn, and the association steward, Bill Baier. ''We have interviewed, we`re looking at transcripts and we`re reviewing the computerized readouts,'' said Schmitz. ''Now, we`ll re-interview.
''Yes, there sure was an unusual betting pattern.''
Sent off at odds of 10-to-1, Thorn Eagle won by three lengths over Ultra Osborne, 2-to-1 second betting choice. Leah Christina, a 31-to-1 longshot, crossed the finish line third, trailing Ultra Osborne by three lengths.
But Leah Christina was disqualified and placed sixth for interfering with three horses in the stretch, and 35-to-1 longshot Midnight Eagle was promoted from fourth to third.
Fox Valley Bullet, the 9-to-5 favorite, was eighth in the nine-horse field and Valunga N., 7-to-2 third choice at the betting windows, was seventh. From a handicapping point of view, the chemistry of the $5,000 conditioned pace for non-winners of $2,500 in their last six starts is confusing.
Thorn Eagle, victorious only once in 26 prior starts this year, had a pattern of coming from far behind in his previous Maywood starts. Yet this time he was permitted to take the lead at the outset and, curiously, he never was seriously challenged.
Sources say the key to the investigation is whether or not Valunga N.`s driver-trainer and co-owner, Brian Pelling, controlled the race and forced Fox Valley Bullet into a traffic jam that kept the favorite from finishing in the top three.
Pelling could not immediately be reached for comment.
Sources say the probe also includes Dennis Nardoni, who owns horses that Pelling trains and drives. Although Nardoni didn`t have a horse in the race, he may have visited Pelling in the paddock, sources say.
''Yes, we have questioned that gentleman,'' Schmitz replied when asked about a possible Nardoni connection to a race in which he seemingly wasn`t involved.
Sources also say that holders of the winning trifecta tickets collected approximately $34,000 from a total pool of $105,464. They say that after the race, a meeting was held at a hotel cocktail lounge near the track and the money was divided.
In addition to scrutinizing Pelling`s role, stewards are looking into the way in which the race may have been influenced by horses driven by Marc Aubin, Ron Marsh and Randall Jacobs.
Aubin drove fourth-place Maple Fritz, Marsh was at the reins of ninth-place Battleshoe Profit and Jacobs was in the sulky of fifth-place Little Strikes.
The stewards also have questioned the drivers of the other horses-Steve Pletcher (Thorn Eagle), Dale Hiteman (Ultra Osborne), Darcy Pletcher (Midnight Eagle), Charles Baker (Leah Christina) and Dave Magee (Fox Valley Bullet).
Schmitz said, however, the interference by Baker`s pacer in the late stages apparently wasn`t related to the suspected betting coup. ''There was interference, but from our determination there`s no connection,'' said Schmitz.
Lie-detector tests may be the next step in the investigation, provided the Illinois Harness Horsemen`s Association gives its approval.
A clause in the contract between the horsemen and the track provides for polygraph testing of persons involved if there is sufficient evidence to indicate a suspect race. Two members of management and two horsemen must be in attendance when the test is administered but it can`t be given unless the horsemen`s organization consents.
''We`ve been investigating this since the night in question,'' said Schmitz. ''All I can tell you is that we`re working as fast as we can. We keep digging and digging.
''When you do that, if there`s something there, one thing leads to another, and eventually you are able to bring it all out into the open.''

Why is someone always bringing up Chitown harness. It once had a life and now it's dead, and many opinions on who's fault it was. Whatever boys let's move on now.
Chicago Roots are planted at tracks all over the country. Most can compete with anyone at any level. "once had a life"? It was the best for many years. None of your "Racinos" will ever compete with what sportsman park brought to life!!!! Oh and to respond to the post...…..TONY MO owned maywood
