Taking in the action tonight at Saratoga after a day of Thoroughbred racing. Invested in a pick 5 because I thought the big chalk in the opener was vulnverable. Good news is, he was, the bad news is i caught a pick 5 that i think i got anal raped on. $3749 in the pool and here are the prices.

Payout dont look that bad. One longshot, 4 other horses first or second fav probably. Bet a small handle track and you never know what you get paid.

After the 20% take out that leaves a $3,000 net pool. This means there were 14 winning tickets. I don’t think you got screwed. It’s just 13 other people got lucky like you. This is the problem with the majority of harness tracks nowadays. The handles are so low it is hard to hit anything very big. The pool at the big Saratoga track had a Pick 5 pool of $445,600 and I believe a low 15% take out. Net pool was $378,760. If only 14 people had the win it would have paid $27,054 each. It is all about the pool and the take out rate. With the exceptions of The Meadowlands and Northfield Park harness pools stink for the more exotic bets.

First Pick 5 at Mohawk is guaranteed 100k every night. Doubt Northfield does that.

No big prices. Not like 19-1 in first race wasn’t bettable. All other horses were first or second choice mornin* line. You actually got paid too much.

Ever think the "bad payoff" was the leg 1 winner? Maybe that was really a 10/1 horse that went off 19/1? Maybe that 1/5 losing chalk wasn't worthy of 1/5?
